I took the train to Houli, got off and was greeted by bike rental people. We walked a couple metres to their shop. They were efficient/helpful and their sign was green. They'll ask for a phone number and passport in order to set up the rental (200NTD for a pedal bike, more if you want electric). They provided a map and told me to go down their street till I saw a 7/11 and turn left there. From then on, you follow the path until it turns into Houfeng bikeway which ends surprisingly quickly (5km). Then you can either go back, or make the hairpin turn to do the 12km Dongfeng path. Like people say, it takes about 3 hours to do the whole thing and come back (34km). It took me 1 hour exactly to do the 12km stretch once, with no stops. Since both paths are straight lines, it is hard to get lost unless you deliberately stray from the clearly marked paved path. There are food stalls and washrooms throughout both paths. I'm not sure why other places on the internet recommend starting at Fengyuan, but I found starting at Houli easy (no need for buses, just rent a bike and go). A beautiful departure from the dust, noise, and pollution of the big cities. Relatively...
Read moreThis is such an awesome bike way! We took the electric bike (you can opt for a push back, and it’s honestly not hard if you do exercise regularly) because the salesman was saying it’s hard but after riding through we think it’s possible to use just a push bike, which is what most of the locals use. However, it’s still quite fun using the electric bike, we finished the whole trail within 2 hours, and it was effortless 😂 There are lots of things to see, some beautiful gorges and there’s also a long tunnel through the mountain on the other side. We borrow an electric bike for TWD 600 (for two people) from Lavender, there’s another bike rental that’s just 5 mins away from Lavender bike rental. You’ll see some chickens and wild cats along the way and they’re pretty friendly! If you come close to the sunset it’s...
Read moreThe cycling experience was interesting because of the different sights along the way. It’s easy to find as well and I was lucky as a solo traveller, the staff at the bicycle job gave me a ride to the train station on her motorbike as she was heading out to buy lunch. I would also recommend getting a motorbike tour. It’s good fun and interesting way to see the city. Whether you are walking or riding a bike over this steel bridge, the view is really nice from both sides. Probably because it was a cooler month, the breeze was very refreshing. I loved the views, I loved the long tunnels. You dont have to complete the course if you dont want to, as you can just stop whenever or wherever you want to and make a u-turn to get back out. Go at your own pace, or get the tandem bikes to have a fun travel with...
