Yuemei Sugar Factory月眉糖廠 It's only @ 34 minutes away from my place, via my Vespa. When I was there, early afternoon, I counted about 10 visitors including myself. Not a real popular place during the weekdays but perhaps the weekends are its biggest draw. It’s an OK visit. Not much to see but it’s worth checking it out. It seems that Taiwan had a lot of sugar factories that have become tourist attractions or abandoned. I plan to visit a few more while in my retirement period. Some facts about the factory: "Yuemei Sugar Factory was founded in 1909. It was founded by the Japanese Komatsu Kusanagi and named Dajia Sugar Factory. It belongs to Nippon Sugar Industry Co., Ltd. After the recovery of Taiwan, it was taken over by Taiwan Sugar Corporation Yuemei Sugar Factory. In 1999 , due to environmental changes, it stopped pressing and transformed into a tourist sugar factory."

Can't really tell what's the idea behind this establishment. On the outside it's obviously a sugar processing plant, yet when I entered I found a fair-style atmosphere with dozens of pushy sellers and food stalls. The plant seemingly lacks any funds to make it look more attractive, so it is preserved nearly in an "as-is" condition. People mostly come here for the impromptu night market because if you are not particularly interested in sugar manufacturing, nothing else would attract visitors. Entry is free at least and there are some authentic machinery and railway rolling stock to browse but who knows when the elements will make them disappear.

A good place to bring kids to play, you can feed fish, take a walk in the factory, buy some local souvenirs, enjoy the ice bar and ice cream, and take the tour car around the park, best of all, it won’t need to spend too much money on these activities, the parking space is big and free, just located right next to the front gate, the tour car fee is 50NTD per person, and children shorter than 90cm is free from charge.
