A marvelous museum. We entered it at opening time at 9:00am and left when it was closing, at 5pm! The second floor is fascinating and between reading all the display panels, looking at the artifacts, and listening to the many tracks on the audio guide, you can easily spend 54 hours just on that floor. Then, there are the two movies on the ground floor, with the one where you boats a train being really funny and cute. The other one considered in interviews if school children which are very touching The top floor had temporary exhibitions. The current ones were very interesting. Finally, you can take a long walk in the museums grounds. We spent a lot of time birding there . The museum has an excellent cafè. My chicken curry was delicious, and the latte was excellent and the floral Po pattern of the cream was perfectly done . I totally recommend the visit. We Ubered there from the Shangri La and it took us 25 minutes. Totally worth it . Do opt for the auditions, it adds to...
Read moreVery interesting place to discover Taiwan’s history from the age of aborigines to modern day. The audio guides were very good but unfortunately did not cover all of the exhibits, especially those pertaining to the Second World War. The exhibits were also not in sync with the audio guide in parts. There was also very little information (in English) about Dr Sun Yat Sen and General Chiang Kai Shek and their place in Taiwan’s history. However overall we had a very enjoyable afternoon.
Getting there is not straightforward. The HSR from Taipei gets to Tainan in record time, but we were told we had to take the shuttle to MeiChi Hospital and from there a taxi to the museum and that journey was almost as long as the train trip. ( nearly one hour on the shuttle and 10 minutes by taxi).
Highly recommend visiting the museum and if you are in Taipei it is an excellent opportunity to experience the HSR journey which is both fast...
Read moreInteractive and fairly comprehensive history of Taiwan starting from the prehistoric age until now. When I was here in April 2023, there was a gap in history during the initial days of modern Taiwan post-WWII during the period of martial law. I really liked the life sized models and attempt to place visitors in the time periods and relevant settings throughout the Our Land Our People: The Story of Taiwan permanent exhibit. Many of the placards and signs are bilingual in Mandarin and English. Highly recommend to anyone, especially expats and tourists interested in learning more about Taiwan’s history. Plan for at least 2 hours if not more. Also, the area around the museum is really pretty and a great place to relax for a little bit...
