Daxi Fishing Port, Yilan – a slightly chaotic but worthwhile seafood stop
Even though the port itself is relatively clean, the floors are always wet — water’s essential for keeping seafood fresh, but step by step, you still get that unmistakable fish market feeling in your shoes.
We picked up some corner shrimp, milk clams, and seasonal white whisker shrimp from a stall nearby and had them cooked by one of the restaurants on-site. Everything was fresh and well-prepared — a simple but satisfying meal.
There are two paid parking lots and one free one nearby. After 1:30 pm, the boats return, and both vendors and visitors show up in greater numbers. If you’re driving, it’s best to arrive before noon — even on weekdays, it fills up quickly.
The layout is straightforward: the lower section by the water hosts most of the seafood vendors, while the indoor area is more focused on cooking services. Pricing varies, and here’s a rough reference from my last visit (May 2025, per kilo unless noted): • Live sweet shrimp (only stalls 48 & 49): 500 regular / 600 large • Sweet shrimp (non-live): 400–600 • Angel red shrimp (imported): ~1200 • Botan shrimp: ~400 • Sea tiger prawn: ~1200 (regular size) • Grape shrimp: ~350–500 • Purple sea urchin: 150/each • Bafun sea urchin: 300/each • Scarlet prawn: 400–800 (raw) • White shrimp: ~350 (The rest — mantis shrimp, sakura shrimp, etc. — I didn’t see that day, just referencing past notes.)
The variety of fish here is overwhelming. Whether you’re buying to cook at home or just looking for something fresh to try, your experience depends a bit on your selection skills. Still, it’s a great...
Read moreFreshest, best cooked seafood ever! And the real treat for me was being able to try the deep sea angler fish!! I didn't even know it could be caught, let alone be cooked for consumption. The meat had a unique chewy texture and it was cooked in three styles - deep fried in salt and pepper, stir fried "san bei", and steamed and served in a clear soup base.
Loads of other stuff too - sea urchins, three spot flower crabs, squids, prawns and a variety of different fish species (check out the photos).
The place has got two levels, and we tried stall number 10 which was the first stall on level 1. Service was good and the food was cooked and nice to taste!
It's also just right on Da Xi fish harbour and makes for a nice walk around to see the boats and fishermen...
Read moreNice little seafood market place with small stalls setup along the fisherman wharf. We went there around 2 ish on a weekday not very crowded. Quite a good variety of seafood to choose from such as fish, prawn, squid, shell fish, sea urchin, oyster, and more..Most importantly they are very fresh as you can see the eyes still reflecting. Pricing is quite reasonable. Tell the seller to gut the fish if you want to cook them at the seafood hawker stalls next to the fish market at a small price. Cooking cost around 100 TWD for steam cooking, 150 TWD for deep fry. Overall very enjoyable experience compare to big seafood market in the...
