There are lots of great online resources for foreigners visiting this island but I’ll hit some highlights. It’s great for snorkeling, swimming, beaches, and biking around. But at least in the summer it is very hot and very crowded. You need to be extremely patient with other people and with the public transportation. The ferry is good but we couldn’t get on the return ferry we wanted as it filled up. It was fine but only because we were flexible and patient and got on the next one. You can get a round trip ticket at the port—someone will approach you with tickets for sale as soon as you walk up. They’re legit and will make sure you get the right tickets.
I recommend renting an electric bike on the island. JGogo is the only company I know of but they are great. You need an international driving permit for the mopeds but not e-bikes, which go nearly as fast. You can traverse the whole island that way, except a couple steeper hills in the middle. I think it took under an hour to bike around the whole thing, but of course you’ll want to stop a lot.
The good snorkeling spots fill up with guided groups in the afternoon so go in the morning. Secret Beach and Beauty Beach are both good.
Do some research to ensure you have a plan and backup plan to get onward transport after arriving back on the main island. We were lucky enough to make the bus to the HSR station but many were not. It took just over an hour after a 40 minute wait. There was lots of traffic so a car would have taken the same amount of time, though granted we’d have left a little sooner. If you can get a seat on the bus, it’s worth it. Inexpensive, quite comfortable (it’s one of the big tour coaches with nice big seats), and direct to the HSR. If you aren’t near the front of the line, there probably won’t be room on the bus, which only come every 30-60 minutes. The taxis might work but could be more trouble than they’re worth. You won’t have any trouble finding one though. Do your own research for that.
Good luck and have fun! With a little patience it...
Read moreMy favorite place in Taiwan. Great for snorkeling and tide pool exploring with family! Crystal clear and warm water even in late March. Saw 5 green turtles in one snorkeling trip, spotted first one just 5 minutes in water. The locals have done a great job protecting the ocean; therefore, a lot more sea creatures to see while snorkeling and tide pool exploring than Kenting. Tips: Most B&B can help to arrange for boat ticket, scooter/electric bike rental (see next tip), snorkeling, scuba diving, tide pool etc... No taxi on island, you can either rent a scooter (gas one NT$350 needs driver license but our shop didn't even bother to check as the contract freed them from any obligation, electrical ones doesn't ) or electrical bicycle (NT$350 no passenger)or hire a driver (point-to-point NT$150-$200 per trip or NT$1500-$2000 for 24 hours around the island) Most B&B partner with a scooter shop which can transport your luggage to/from the B&B, so you don't have to worry about riding with your luggage. Worth going on a tide pool guided tour (in Chinese only) first as some creatures are poisonous, then explore by yourself. You can stay behind after the tour. Mentioning your B&B at all-you-can-eat BBQ places and ticketed sight seeing places might get...
Read moreCalm and isolated Been there for just three days, the activities I did was between snorkeling and wandering around observing nature... My recommendation is:
Rent a scooter for your stay so you can go around the whole island very easily and do the most of your stay.
Snorkling around the Vase rock isn't a must at all, may be because I'm used to dive in much better sea environment "the red sea"I find the corals in the vase rock beach so damaged and all dead.
Observing the sunset at Gebnwan is a must, extreamly beautiful.
Black devil cave is so amazing place you can see the ocean from up top, I see it's a must.
My final recommendation, try the local breakfast sold in the street, extreamly cheap, extreamly tasty and authentic don't go for the big brand go as local as you can.. You just need to be very early up coz it's all sold out by 9:30 or 10 am max :D.
Not so much of a night life though. May be coz we went on a relatively...
