Xincheng Catholic Church — Attraction in Xincheng

This is one of the most beautiful churches I've seen in Taiwan. It's also unique and features indigenous as well as Japanese elements. The church's walls wrapped by beautiful vines that stretch across the whole church. The church retains beautiful colorful glass panels, and during this Christmas, features a beautiful decoration about Jesus's birth. 明治29年(1896)12月駐守新城分遣隊一名士兵欺辱太魯閣族的少女，引起族人憤慨，在通事李阿隆暗中協助下，由赫赫斯社的頭目哈鹿那威和武士林社頭目....等率領各社壯丁，突擊新城分遣隊監視哨，將十三名日軍全數殲滅，史稱「新城事件」，也埋下了大正3年(1914)的「太魯閣戰役」的導火線。

「新城事件」是日本與太魯閣族人衝突的開端，但目前遺留下來的遺跡不多。現今新城天主堂的範圍内，仍留有日治時期神社的遺跡。新城事件發生之後，為紀念在太魯閣戰役中陣亡的日本軍警，日本政府於大正3年(1914)建造木造納骨堂，大正9年(1920)又設立「殉難將士瘞骨碑」，背面還刻有罹難者的名字，但隨著時間推移，現在已模糊難辨。
