整個步道百分之九十九是柏油路。

1.入口處：水社商場往向山遊客中心方向不遠處，台21線63K處行政院農委會茶葉改良場魚池分場右轉上山。(明潭國中，國小附近,馥麗飯店旁,有顆高大的樹：桃花心木） 2.車輛可通行上去幾百公尺，早點到的話，路邊有三四處可停車。 3.右轉上山後，右邊為馥麗溫泉飯店後方，可看到幾棟日式舊建築，是以前茶改場宿舍，已被行政院文建會列為歷史建築。 4.兩旁種植兩三公尺高的茶花樹。 5.有一叉路往“八番私人住宅”，我們往猫囒山山頂，要直走。這邊標示，非公務車輛，不要再往前。實際上再往上數十公尺反而有較大的停車場，可停十部車左右。 6.然後會看到茶改場的辦公建築。 7.路的正前方有一圓頂紀念亭，亭內有一紀念碑，是紀念日據時代前茶改場魚池支場場長新井耕吉郎，亭旁有解說牌，敘述其生平事蹟。（備註：此茶改場與日月潭發電廠幾乎同一時期建置） 8.紀念碑旁左邊是一段階梯步道，爬完階梯，續走數十公尺平緩的碎石路，接回柏油路大道。此一小段是猫囒山步道中唯一非柏油路段。 9.接回主道後，就是紅葉步道，因為道路右邊種植22顆錫蘭橄欖樹，地上僅是其紅色落葉。 10.續走，有一大觀景平台，是觀看日月潭日出的好地方。目前整修中。 11.接著說杉木造林地。途中有數處較小的觀景平台。 12.快到山頂前看到一大片茶葉種植。 13.看到中央氣象局日月潭氣象站的牌子。 14.猫囒山打卡的大石頭，寫著海拔1020公尺。旁邊有很棒的公廁。 15.續走往上幾公尺，是氣象站觀測設備。較醒目的是高高的風力塔。風力塔所在處是全區最高處。 16.山頂原立有三等三角點基石，現已不見。
