Историко-краеведческий музей археологии и фортификации в Худжанде был открыт 29 ноября 1986 году в дни празднования 2500-летия Худжанда и работает в составе кафедры гуманитарных исследований при ректорате Худжандского государственного университета им. Б.Г. Гафурова. Он расположен в помещениях восстановленной в 1999 году части восточной крепостной стены Худжандской крепости VIII - X в.в., которая была частью фортификационной системы города. Толстые стены цитадели из сырцового кирпича были укреплены мощными башнями. Современное здание музея имитирует только внешний облик средневековой крепости. Основную часть коллекционных фондов составляют археологические коллекции и находки, полученные в ходе работ на территории Худжанда Северо-Таджикской археологической комплексной экспедиции АН ТССР в 1954 - 1986 годах. Коллекционный фонд музея насчитывает около 1200 предметов, почти половина из них постоянно экспонируется. Экспозиция музея располагается в зале площадью около 150 квадратных метров и рассказывает об истории и архитектурных особенностях фортификационных сооружений Худжанда. Экспозиция представляет жизнь населения крепости в самые различные эпохи, начиная с периода ее строительства в VI - V веках до н.э. до арабского завоевания Средней Азии, когда Худжандская крепость считалась одной из самой неприступных в регионе. Часть экспозиции посвящена средневековой истории крепости. Она рассказывает о культуре и занятиях жителей города, представляя образцы средневековой керамики и утвари, фрагменты декоративных элементов архитектурных сооружений, стеклянные изделия, надмогильные памятники с надписями. Среди шедевров музейного собрания - сакский шлем, керамика античного, эллинистического и средневекового периодов. В экспозиции представлены многочисленные планы и карты Худжанда различных эпох. Небольшой раздел экспозиции музея посвящен истории изучения Худжанда и участникам археологических раскопок на его территории (А.Л. Куну, В.В. Бартольду, М.Е. Массону), а также исследователям, внесшим вклад в создание музея. В музее проводятся регулярные обзорные экскурсии для школьников. Посещение музея включено в программу городских мероприятий по празднованию государственных праздников Таджикистана.
