We visited the Isimila site over the weekend, and the location itself is absolutely stunning — a must-see if you're near Ruaha or Iringa. The site itself deserves definitely more than five stars!! The fact that a guide is included in the ticket is also a plus!
However, I'm giving three stars based on my overall experience. When we arrived, a Tanzanian TV crew was present at the site. We were asked — or rather pressured — to participate in their filming. As a result, we had to wait around 45min before we could begin our tour, and when we asked to proceed without delay, we were denied. It felt like we were trapped into being part of the shoot, which was frustrating and intrusive.
What is worse is that I later discovered that photos of me had been posted on Isimila’s official Instagram account — very likely taken by our guide (not the TV channel), without my knowledge nor consent. I wasn’t even aware that these pictures were being taken.
Therefore, if you're concerned about privacy, I strongly recommend keeping an eye on whether your guide is taking photos during your visit. This is absolutely unacceptable for me and I’ve since contacted them via Instagram to request that the photos be removed.
Given my experience I would rate the visitor...
Read moreThe Isimila Stone Age Site is one of the most fascinating archaeological sites in Tanzania. Located near Iringa town, this place offers a unique glimpse into human history, dating back hundreds of thousands of years. The site is famous for its impressive sandstone pillars and ancient tools discovered in the valley — a true open-air museum of prehistory.
The guided tour is highly educational. Local guides are knowledgeable and passionate, explaining both the geological formations and the Stone Age artifacts found here. The walk through the gorge is scenic, peaceful, and ideal for photography.
Although the road to the site can be a bit rough, the visit is absolutely worth it. Remember to bring comfortable shoes, water, and a hat — the sun can be strong.
Overall, Isimila is a hidden gem that combines natural beauty with deep historical significance. A must-visit for anyone traveling through...
Read moreMust see in Central TZ. The pictures do not do this place justice. It was incredibly beautiful and an easy walk through the canyon. Be careful if you go off the trail because it gets really slippery with sliding rocks and debris. We did a loop that probably took a little over an hour. I've attached a Google map picture of the route we took since there is no map at the site. The cost for non-residents was about $12/person and residents was $6/person which included the small museum. Be sure to bring plenty of water since the canyon gets pretty hot and direct sun. If you are in the area I would highly recommend coming. It is a super unique topography amongst the green rocky mountains...
