Arrival and First Impressions: The journey to Mahale Mountains started with a flight to Kigoma, followed by a scenic boat ride across the crystal-clear waters of Lake Tanganyika. The stunning landscapes and pristine beauty of the area were immediately captivating. Upon arrival, I was greeted by friendly guides and staff who made me feel welcomed and excited for the adventure ahead.
Accommodation and staff: The staff were attentive, and the food was delicious, featuring a mix of local and international cuisine.
Activities and Highlights: The highlight of the tour was undoubtedly the chimpanzee trekking. The guides were knowledgeable and passionate, sharing insights about the chimpanzees and their behaviors. Observing these incredible creatures in their natural habitat was both thrilling and humbling. Their interactions, playful antics, and sheer presence left a lasting impression.
In addition to chimpanzee trekking, I enjoyed hiking through the lush forests, taking boat rides on the lake, and swimming in its refreshing waters. The diverse flora and fauna, coupled with the stunning landscapes, made every activity an adventure.
Wildlife and Nature: The biodiversity in Mahale Mountains is astounding. Besides chimpanzees, I spotted various species of monkeys, birds, and even a few elusive forest creatures. The dense forest, clear streams, and towering peaks create a unique ecosystem that is both vibrant and serene.

Read moreThe perfect place to cap off a low budget spontaneous trip in Tanzania. Though known by few, Mahale Mountains National park is accessible by car up to the park headquarters. From there you will need to charter a park ranger boat for ~$50 USD each way to get to the lodging and rest areas. These boat rides are most beautiful during sunrise as the sun peeks over the peaks of the mountains to the East. At sunset you will find a pristine sunset over Lake Tanganyika and the DRC that is rivaled by few places in the world. Staff offers laundry service and will cook for you for a fee, but you may need to bring your own food from outside the park. Be sure to call ahead. Chimpanzee tracking is available for 53,000 Tsh. Set aside a day or two to make sure you have enough time to find the chimps with the help of a ranger and trackers. After locating the chimps you will don a surgical mask and be able to get close to the chimps. If you’re lucky, the chimps might approach you and want to play. Each group is limited to 1 hour with the chimps, so afterwards feel free to hike to the waterfalls where there are tranquil swimming pools and daring cliff jumps.
