My husband and I decided to book a private tour (just us two) to Mikumi National Park. We woke up at around 4:30 am at our hotel in Zanzibar and got picked up and taken to the airport in Zanzibar. We took a short one hour flight to Mikumi National Park with other people from the island that wanted to visit the mainland. We only had one day to see as many animals so my expectations weren't so high since typically people spend days going on Safari trips. I would highly recommend splurging on your own private tour because it is much more comfortable and you can choose how long you want to stay to see certain animals. It's much more flexible and relaxing. The guides were friendly and had a lot of insight about the animals. LUCKILY, we got to see a leopard, 2 prides, lions feeding on a zebra, an elephant with its baby, a nile croc, giraffes, etc. We were there such a short amount of time so I was lucky to see so much. I would recommend this safari for people who only have a limited of time and want to get the experience. Obviously not everyone is as lucky to see as many animals so just cross your fingers and try your luck :-)

Amazing park! So much to see and explore. However, I just wanted to let other tourists know that it is illegal for the tour operators to leave the road. When we went, multiple tour operators left the path to chase a lion. It was awful to witness as the lion was clearly agitated by it. Upon discussing the situation further with our amazing tour guide (who stayed on the path), we learned that if caught (which can be done through tourists taking photos of the safari vehicles, or by being caught by a park ranger) the tour guide can be banned from the park for a year, which they of course don't want. The tour guides do this not because they want to, but because they feel pressure from tourists (especially from tourists from Zanzibar who book a one day safari- don't do this- most of the animals are active in the mornings and evenings anyway!). If you want a guaranteed sighting, go to a zoo. Stay on the path and enjoy the amazing nature, there are so many close up opportunities to see the wildlife while being respectful to both the tour guides and animals!!

I had the incredible opportunity to visit Mikumi National Park💫, and I must say, it was an unforgettable adventure! From the moment I arrived, I was captivated by the stunning landscapes and the vibrant wildlife that surrounds you.😍😍 The highlight of my trip was undoubtedly the chance to see lions🦁 in their natural habitat. Watching these majestic creatures roam freely was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I was also fortunate enough to encounter a variety of other animals, including elephants🐘, giraffes 🦒 , and zebras🦓, all of which added to the thrill of the safari. The park is well-maintained, and the staff were friendly and knowledgeable, providing insights that enhanced our experience. The early morning game drives were particularly magical, as the park comes alive with the sounds of nature and the golden light of dawn.🤍 I highly recommend Mikumi National Park to anyone looking for an authentic safari experience. Whether you're a wildlife enthusiast or just looking to connect with nature, this park offers something for everyone.❤️🔥

We visited the park twice in nov/dec with just 2,5 weeks in between. The difference between our visits were striking: during our first visit the number of animals around the hippo pool was magnificent: lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras, impalas, buffalos, wildebeast, warthogs etc. It was really spectacular!! About 2,5 weeks later the place was nearly empty because the wet season has started and the grass started getting greenish. So the first visit was perfect and the second visit was a bit disappointing. To buy tickets at the entrance is an easy and pretty fast process. They don't force you to take a guide or a guided tour. You can just drive the roads with your own (rental) car. In the park is a campground with toilets and some benches which you can use for a lunch stop. The park is quite big, but most of the roads are just in a pretty small area north of the main road. It was not bust in the park, just 15 or 20 cars driving around. Completely different from the parks in Northern Tanzania.

Absolutely one of the best experience in my life. I travelled here by safari vehicles from Dar Es Salaam, and I have to admit, 6 hours travelling by car is really difficult, but as soon as you come into the National Park, when you see giraffe crossing the motorway, you forget all that journey. We were told by our guide that we were so lucky because we saw 4 lions, two male and two female. It's kinda difficult to spot them. Beside lions, we saw and made excellent pictures of elephants, giraffes, zepras, hippos, monkeys, birds, antilopes..... Tips: 1. Bring a good camera(with good zoom, 30x will make nice pics, i made photos with that type of camera) 2. Bring mosquito repellent. 3. It is advisable to go to safari once in the evening and once in the morning, two drives (to choose that type of safari tour) because it is likely to see all of the animals in the National Park. 4. Bring snacks, you might get hungry.
