Hakuna Matata Spice Farm – Surprisingly Fun & Interactive!

I’ll be honest—I thought this would be just another typical tour, but I was totally wrong! It turned out to be an insightful and hands-on experience that engages all your senses. Instead of just looking at spices, you actually touch, smell, and taste them, making you appreciate the everyday spices we often take for granted.

Our guide and his assistant were informative and pleasant, making the experience both educational and enjoyable. They explained everything in an engaging way, and you could tell they really knew their stuff.

The highlight? The coconut tree climber! Not only does he scale the tree like it’s nothing, but he also puts on a great show, making the experience even more entertaining.

There’s also a shop where you can buy fresh spices and fragrances, so if you want to take some authentic Zanzibar flavors home, this is the perfect place.

Bonus tip: The farm is on the way to Jambiani or Paje, so it’s a great stop if you're heading in that direction.

Bottom line? Way more interesting than expected—a fun, sensory-filled experience with great guides that’s well...

We had an excellent time visiting the farm, with our guide speaking perfect French for the tour and explaining in depth about all spices/plants we could see, even quizzing us on our learnings :). Then you are taken through a degustation of fruits, some of which were uncommon for us so it was really interesting (such as red bananas, some specific Tanzanian citrus). We also were lucky to see a couple of monkeys during the visit. Overall it was a great experience. You can also buy spices to support the farm (and we thought the prices were fair, it is much cheaper than what you can find in Europe and it supports many...). We were told about tips only once, at the end of the visit and it was brought up as welcomed tips not mandatory. I find the comments on tipping from other people extremely unfair, the visit is great, with great explanations and lasts for at least an hour (ours was even longer) and visiting the farm is otherwise free so obviously it's...

Was very interesting to find out so much about spices, however we had a guide that was supposed to speak italian but his italian wasn't that good, so lots of times we were confused by what he wanted to say. He couldn't answer the few questions we had (like how big the farm was). The tour did feel a bit rushed, our lasted one hour, and that they only cared about making money and receiving a tip, which they made sure they got (they kept mentioning it and asking for it). They wanted us to tip the three people taking us around the farm (guide, trainee, one guy that was getting and opening the spices for us), the guy that climbed the tree and opened the coconut for us, the guy that cut fruit for us... We didn't know they were supposed to serve food, we only got fruit.

We are happy we did a spice tour because it was interesting, but our experience wasn't too nice. Our guide took us there, we didn't know the...

Visiting this farm with a guide was an amazing and unforgettable experience. First we were shown a lot of spices - we could smell, touch and taste them, we were also given some samples to our small and lovely baskets made out of leaves. After the tour we had an opportunity to taste an African lunch which was mostly plant-based. I was especially astonished by two dishes, each one made of a different kind of a banana. One dish was sweet and consisted of bananas with coconuts, the other one consisted of bananas baked with tomato sauce and coconut milk, so it tasted like potatoes. For dessert we could try various types of fresh fruit. There is also a shop with local spices, products like soaps made out of local plants and coffee. Guys working here are super nice, friendly and professional. I wholeheartedly recommend visiting this farm, it was one of the best adventures during our holidays in Zanzibar.

🍃Nature, 🗺Adventure: while not expecting too much from the “Spice Tour”, this little adventure was a treasure! The guides are friendly and knowledgeable, their English is excellent. The history and reasons how/why specific spices came to and were grown in Zanzibar, is fascinating. If you like nature and enjoy experiences that are slightly off the beaten track, Hakuna Matata Spice Farm in Dole is one to add to your list. If you don’t particularly enjoy botany or obscure adventures, this may not be the ideal stop for you. 📌Note: bring some mosquito spray for your ankles, as the spice tour takes place in thick and humid “jungle-like” conditions. There is an opportunity to buy small packets of home grown spices at the end of the tour, only cash is accepted.

They asked for entrance fee, and now reading the other reviews it seems that it’s not common behavior. Maybe we were an easy target, 2 individuals getting down from a hired car. About the tour, we felt we were on the run, very hasty. There’s almost nothing resembling an authentic farm, just small parcels of land arranged for visitors. And arranged may be an overstatement. The stars are for the spices themselves and their natural beauty, but that’s pretty much it. Don’t know where the good reviews are coming from, maybe their strategy to conquer you with hats and ties made of leaves and some random guy climbing a tree at the end does the work. If I’d known all these before, I would definitely consider visiting another farm, since they’re plenty nearby.
