Enchanting Encounter with Nature: Jozani Forest, Zanzibar

Nestled in the heart of the captivating island of Zanzibar, Jozani Forest stands as a sanctuary of natural wonder and biodiversity. My recent visit to this verdant paradise left me spellbound, and I'm eager to share my experience.

From the moment I stepped foot into Jozani Forest, I was greeted by a symphony of exotic birdcalls and the rustling of lush foliage. The air was infused with the earthy scent of the forest, instantly transporting me into a realm untouched by time.

As I embarked on the guided tour through the forest's winding trails, I was mesmerized by the sheer diversity of flora and fauna that surrounded me. Towering mahogany trees, delicate ferns, and vibrant orchids adorned the forest floor, creating a tapestry of colors and textures that seemed straight out of a dream.

However, the true highlight of my journey was encountering the rare and majestic red colobus monkeys, which call Jozani Forest their home. These endangered primates, with their striking crimson coats and expressive faces, captivated my attention as they swung gracefully through the canopy above. Witnessing these beautiful creatures in their natural habitat was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that I will cherish forever.

But Jozani Forest is not just about its charismatic inhabitants; it's also a crucial conservation area dedicated to preserving Zanzibar's rich biodiversity. Through sustainable ecotourism initiatives and community involvement, the forest serves as a beacon of hope for the protection of our planet's natural treasures.

In addition to its ecological significance, Jozani Forest offers visitors a chance to reconnect with nature on a profound level. Whether you're a seasoned adventurer or a casual nature enthusiast, exploring the tranquil pathways of this forest will leave you feeling rejuvenated and inspired.

In conclusion, my visit to Jozani Forest was nothing short of magical. It's a place where the rhythms of the natural world unfold in perfect harmony, and where every moment is infused with a sense of wonder and discovery. If you find yourself in Zanzibar, don't miss the opportunity to experience the enchantment of Jozani Forest...

We decided to take a half-day trip that included a stop at Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park. The journey itself was already quite an experience, offering a firsthand glimpse into the reality of corruption, with around 8–10 police checkpoints seemingly set up just to collect bribes. While this is worth mentioning, it does not influence our rating of the park itself.

The park is undeniably beautiful, showcasing lush nature and a rich variety of flora and fauna. It was a pleasure to observe the animals in their natural habitat, and our guide provided plenty of interesting information about the different plant species.

Unfortunately, the negative aspects outweighed the positives for us:

Mass tourism: Visitors are herded through the park in groups of approximately 40 people, which significantly diminishes the experience. Tipping culture: Even during the initial briefing, there was already a strong emphasis on tipping the guide. Disregard for rules: While sensible rules are explained—such as keeping a respectful distance from the monkeys—they are largely ignored. Most visitors end up crowding the animals, and the guides do little to enforce these guidelines. Littering: One of the rules is to avoid leaving trash behind, which is ironic considering the park is littered with plastic waste. Rangers don’t seem to take any initiative to clean up or maintain the area. In the end, Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park felt like just another location in Zanzibar being exploited to the maximum for tourism. A real shame, considering the natural beauty and ecological importance...

Jozan forest The tour guides are well trained to give out all the needed information, and sometimes you can find them there at the Jozani Office or you can come with from the place they booked your tour from, ie. Stone town, Nungwi or else were in Zanzibar, but i prefer the one i meat on the sports cos they have more knowledge and experience since that place needs someone who is more expert and got more experience to give more informations and activities going on from there, i would suggest you take the tour guides man from their office for more information,

the good time to go and visit its morning from 10am time before you find jam of people and monkeys are still fresh and okey still to have fun with you. (Red Monkey), Blue monkeys are stubborn. Apart away from Monkey you will have a chance to pass through huge and quite forest,

there is a local restaurant where you can relax and order your coffee and other drinks.

after getting out the main get there is local Mama and Dada selling some fresh fruits like Banana, Mangoes and so on.

The place is beautiful, and you will have much fun being here, taking pictures with Red monkeys, Walking in the middle of the jungle.

Precautions:- But don't go with bear foot, its not safe and you won't be allowed since there is some reefs a long the way that can hurt you in one way or another, its better to have closed shoes for your safety, Also don't come with any of the food material expecting to give monkeys its not allowed to feed the monkey, you might fall into penalty and take you out...

TOURIST TRAP - AVOID! This is the classic tourist scam. After paying the entrance fee, the guide asked us if we wanted a private tour (it was 4 of us) or join other tourists. The private tour was 20 dollars on top. The entrance fee includes a visit at the mangrove forest, 10-15 minutes which you have to reach by driving. Short distance but you have to ask your driver to drive you there. Or drive yourself. After the mangroves, back to the "forest" which actually we didn't see. A short walk in the trees next to the road , where you can see some monkeys. You can take amazing pictures and the guide was really funny. After other 10-15 mins, the guide walked us back to the entrance. The entire tour takes not even one hour. At the very end the guide told us there are longer tours (3h or 7h) The most annoying thing is that the guide claimed to be a volunteer, so.he cheekily expected to be tipped. "Tip is highly recommended" it's written everywhere. Our guide was not happy with the tip and quite rudely he said "this is a joke" "you didn't like what you saw". He was literally begging for more money, saying that the entrance fee does not include the guide. For such a short tour, and for that attitude, I don't recommend to come here. Try to contact before, have a long tour and settle the "tip" for the guide before starting.

Booked this tour because my room wasn't ready and thought the drive through the towns would be interesting. Thus, I consider the drive which was about an hour really engrossing. The monkeys were cute and our guide Shaeeb was committed to environmental conservation which was fantastic. He explained the salinity and uniqueness of the mangroves (similar to the swamps in Florida) which is fascinating considering this is the same seawater from the magnificent turquoise Indian Ocean. The mangroves protect the island from flooding and there used to be a lot more. The forest is beautiful and used to house the extinct Zanzibar Leopard…videographic evidence suggests that the leopard is still alive, illusive but not extinct. The last sighting was in the 80’s so thats a nice little mystery. Another interesting story was the introduction of the Eucalyptus tree to the forest in an attempt to control water levels but its invasive and not attempts are being made to remove these massive trees. Consequently, there are magnificent uprooted trees which I found awe-inspiring. I enjoyed my time here. As someone who was not driving, I found the drive, the monkeys, the mangroves and the forest for $80 plus tip worth it. This is Africa and Im happy to support the local economy 💜🇹🇿
