TL;DR - Did not live up to the hype. If you go, firmly tell the old man to leave you alone so you can enjoy the garden in peace.
I regret making the 1.5 hour round trip from Chiang Mai. Only worth it if you are already planning to be in the area.
The garden was underwhelming, lots of phalluses and references to vulvas (fruit, flowers, etc.) I felt they could have done more with other parts? Mouths, hands, etc.
The woman was very welcoming and hospitable, but her partner (old Australian guy) ruined the experience for me. We got there an hour before closing, but he talked at us for a good 40 minutes before we could even begin exploring the gardens. I was trusting that they would take care of us but he seemed more interested in hearing the sound of his own voice. While his verbose lecturing was mildly irritating, it was the content of his speeches that left me feeling harassed, objectified, and utterly turned off!
He begins by describing the morphological differences between Asians and takes a stab at guessing my ancestry. (Always a painful game - iykyk) To no one's surprise but his, he gets it wrong. I explain that I'm mixed race and he says, "it doesn't show" eye roll knowing I share many of my european mother's features He then has the narcissistic gall to suggest that I have my ancestry wrong and should double check on that.
When I finally confront him and tell him that I am offended by his arrogance, he completely ignores the opportunity to demonstrate humility and issue an apology. In true patronizing fashion, he defends himself and continues to give unsolicited advice on how to increase...
Read moreThis is a hidden gem in Chiang Mai, and hopefully soon will become a known gem. Come with as little expectations as possible, especially if you celebrate femininity more than or as much as masculinity, because at the time of my visit, the space hosts more art pieces on masculinity. There are some pieces that focus on women, but mostly through the male lens, due to inevitable cultural reasons. However, it is still a wonderful and definitely a smart/strategic start of the one and only erotic garden in Thailand. So kudos to Katai, the mastermind and the queen of this beautiful land of dreams!
At the time of writing this review, the admission is 300 THB including a drink of your choice (a wide selection of tea). We were informed that from our second visit on, we would only need to pay for the drinks. You will go on a guided tour with Katai, or her husband if he's present. Both are wonderful, kind and funny. With Katai your conversation will be more directed to arts, whereas with her husband, you will be absorbing tons of interesting anthropological facts (yes, he knows your...
Read moreChiang Mai Erotic Garden is such a unique and memorable place to visit in Mae Rim. The garden is beautifully maintained and filled with creative sculptures and plants that celebrate sensuality and nature in a fun, artistic way. What really makes the experience special is the tour with Katai, the owner—she’s warm, welcoming, and explains the ideas behind the artworks with humor and insight. The complimentary tea and snacks at the teahouse are a lovely touch too.
It’s not in the city center, so plan transport in advance, but it’s absolutely worth the trip. Go with an open mind and a sense of curiosity—you’ll leave smiling, thoughtful, and maybe even inspired. Highly recommended if you’re looking for something different in Chiang Mai!
Best quote of the day: “this used to be a chicken farm before I bought it, now it’s a cock...
