The natural caves in this area are a remarkable experience, becoming increasingly beautiful the deeper you explore. Inside, you’ll find fascinating rock formations, including stalactites and stalagmites, which create an otherworldly atmosphere as they slowly build over time. Another highlight of the caves is the presence of bats. In several of the caves, we saw clusters of them hanging from the ceiling, sometimes sleeping and other times stirring in response to the activity inside. Their high-pitched sounds added to the immersive experience, making the caves feel even more alive.
The surrounding environment is just as impressive. The caves are nestled within an ancient forest, which adds to the sense of adventure and natural beauty. The entire area is well-maintained and remarkably clean, enhancing the overall experience. Beyond the caves, there is also a hiking trail that winds through the forest, offering an additional way to explore the landscape. It’s a great option for those who want to extend their visit and enjoy more of the area's natural beauty.
Additionally, the drive from Chiang Mai to Samoeng is both scenic and exciting, particularly on a scooter. For those riding with a passenger, I recommend using a 160cc scooter or higher, as some of the hills are steep and long, making the extra power a valuable asset for comfort and safety. Along the way, the route offers stunning views of multiple temperate zones, making the journey as enjoyable as the destination. I definitely will...
Read moreMy journey to Mae Sap Cave, also known as the Rainbow Cave, began with a scenic drive through the lush green hills of Chiang Mai.
The Ascent: The path leading to the cave entrance was a bit steep, requiring a moderate level of fitness. The air was cool and crisp, filled with the sounds of nature.
The Descent:
Armed with a flashlight, I ventured into the cool, dark interior of the cave. The air was damp and the silence was profound, broken only by the drip-drip-drip of water from the stalactites hanging from the ceiling. As I navigated through the narrow passages, I was mesmerized by the intricate formations of stalactites and stalagmites, each one a unique masterpiece sculpted by nature over millennia.
The Rainbow Wall: It was a sight to behold! A wall of rock, shimmering with a kaleidoscope of colors, created by the interplay of light and minerals. It was as if nature had painted a masterpiece, a testament to its extraordinary artistry.
Tips: 1.The cave is pretty dark, rent flashlight, safety cap and bring the wooden pole.
2.Moderate climb and dark inside. 3.Get fit and stay healthy to be ready to take steep walk. 4.Restroom is very local and it does not clean much. Bring own...
Read moreToday, I rode a motorbike over 40 kilometers one way from Chiang Mai city to Mae Sap Cave, but the experience was quite disappointing. According to the posted information, I should have been charged 120 THB, which includes the fee for myself and my motorbike. However, the staff asked me to pay 140 THB, which left me confused as to what the additional 20 THB was for.
What made the situation worse was that the site only accepts cash payments. Unfortunately, I didn’t have enough cash with me and intended to use KBank’s QR payment system. However, there were no ATMs or other facilities nearby to withdraw cash, leaving me with no choice but to turn back. This meant I wasted an entire afternoon riding nearly 90 kilometers round trip and saw nothing.
I hope the management considers offering more payment options in the future, such as QR payments or nearby cash withdrawal services, to accommodate visitors who may not carry cash. This would greatly improve the overall experience and prevent other visitors from having similarly frustrating...
