Mon Jam is a mountain community/village about 1 hour from Chiang Mai, near the town of Mae Rim. It’s famous for being home to the ethnically diverse Hmong Tribespeople, and the cold weather combined with gorgeous mountain views. Where is Mon Jam North of Chiang Mai, about 37km (25mile) drive. First you drive from Chiang Mai city to Mae Rim town, just on the outskirts of Chiang Mai. Then you take a left into the mountains. The last 20 minutes or so are a spectacular drive (or ride if you’re in a motorbike). How to get to Mon Jam? First, presumably, you’ll be in Chiang Mai. Now, you have 3 choices to get from Chiang Mai to Mon Jam. Drive yourself, take a taxi or ride a scooter. The 2nd half of the journey is STEEP. I took an old Honda Civic automatic, and it was a slow drive up the hill! Better to have a 4-wheel-drive vehicle, but it is possible with a 2-wheel drive like mine. If you’re on a scooter, if it’s 125cc or less, AND automatic, AND 2 people are riding – it will be a slow, zig-zagged approach. The road isn’t too bad actually, it’s just the gradient. And then once you reach the town of Mon Jam, and drive to your campsite, that’s the only bad bit of road, the last hundred metres or so. Things to do in Mon Jam Mon Jam, as I mentioned, is just outside Mae Rim. And Mae Rim is home to half of the activities in Chiang Mai! So in terms of things to do, there are a lot. Let’s have a look: Camping in Mon Jam. This is the main event. Day trips to Mon Jam from Chiang Mai are possible, but I recommend staying 1 night and staying in the huts/pods. Pongyang Jungle Coaster Zipline. There’s a cafe complex near Mon Jam, just 10 minutes drive, that’s home to a zipline, a great coffee shop and a rustic ‘jungle coaster’, where you control a little cart at the speed of your choosing around the jungle. Really cool. Mae Sa waterfall. Just as leave you Mae Rim, before you start the mountain drive, you’ll find Mae Sa Waterfall. Elephant POOPOOPAPER Park. A Chiang Mai insitution. Great for kids. An ethical, pro-elephant centre that recycles elephant poo into PAPER! Yup. Flying Squirrels Zip Line Chiang Mai. Chiang Mai’s most famous zipline. Coffee @ Pong Yeang Berry-Windyhill. Popular with the instagram crowd is Berry-Windyhill Cafe. Great view points and cheap, tasty thai food. A good spot for lunch. Queen Sirikit Botanical Garden and it’s canopy walk. Not my kinda thing, but a well-made Royal botanical garden. The canopy walkway is pretty cool though. Strawberry Farms. The weather in Mon Jam means strawberries are in abundance. You’ll drive past no less than 20 strawberry farms, all of which have a little shop selling fresh produce. Stop by when you drive past. Skywalk Mon Jam. Rivaling the botanical gardens canopy walk is Mon Jam’s skywalk. Flowers a plenty, great views and, you guessed it, perfect for the Instagram lovers! Waterfall restaurant . Lunch spot, right by a waterfall. Traditional thai-style seating, as local as it comes!

Located only one hour's drive from Chiang Mai city center, this is a really nice place to visit to take advantage of the cool climate and the great scenery. Although there is parking not too much but you only need half an hour here so there is mostly places available. It's a great drive getting there with magnificent views of the mountainous countryside. The views are fantastic but many of the terraces are now covered with camping and glamping areas so that some of it now resembles a space station on a faraway planet. However, it's very popular particularly with Thai tourists but I can't help feeling that the local environment has been adversely affected by presumably an easier way of making money for the landowners. There is a flower garden for which there is an entry fee of 20-50 baht, a coffee shop where you can buy drinks and snacks and also some stalls selling local souvenirs, and there are toilets on site. A nice place to sit overlooking the valley below, before heading back to the heat of the city. I thought the best features were the local market and some flower fields. The market sold local fruit and vegetables with some of the finest avocados we have tasted. Persimmons, oranges, and pomegranates also were available. Cheap and very tasty! I did not stay overnight there, but I was able to experience the natural beauty, and appreciate how this must feel to stay in the simple lodgings overlooking this beautiful area.

Went there mainly for atmosphere and sunrise. It was nearly 2hrs drive of mountain roads from town using Google map towards Mon Chaem. We rent a SUV and left town at 5AM. It was dark and careful uphill drive. The near end of drive up to there is a little misleading and we got there by asking a local. The sun kinda rise at 6:40am when the garden area (so called Mon Chaem) only opened at 7am. Plus, from there, the sun is blocked by higher part of mountain. Other than that, the view and atmosphere of being there in the morning with hot coffee is just great. There could be better choice though. The place is well equipped with public restroom, seats and stalls selling local grown products, coffee and snacks. I would say it isn't worth the drive during dark hours.

Went the day after my wedding with my family & the in laws & had a jolly good time! Started at the cafe with the best view of the mountains & the rolling clouds. Then we went to take a walk nearby where there’s lots of different flower gardens & they each hv their own unique thing going on. Ended up going to the one with the sheep. Kids loved it. There’s shopping around the corner too near where all the vans parks. We proceeded to visit the jungle coaster and it was fun! Skip the drop jump as it’s pretty low & u barely feel any free fall. Def should make the trip out there! Oh, we randomly went to a roadside stall for some food on the way down & it turned out to be one of the best Thai food I had on this trip
