Wachirathan Waterfall Review – A Refreshing Stop Worth Visiting
Nestled in the lush greenery of Doi Inthanon National Park, Wachirathan Waterfall (also spelled Vachiratharn) is one of Chiang Mai’s most impressive and easily accessible waterfalls. If you’re exploring Thailand’s highest mountain or just looking for a scenic nature escape, this waterfall is a great place to visit—offering powerful cascades, cool mist, and a peaceful atmosphere.
Wachirathan is a multi-tiered waterfall, with the main drop plunging about 70 meters (230 feet) into a rocky pool below. The sheer force of the water creates a refreshing mist, making it a perfect spot to cool off after a hike. The roar of the falls is almost meditative, drowning out any noise from visitors and immersing you in nature.
Unlike some remote waterfalls that require long treks, Wachirathan is just a short walk from the parking area (about 5 minutes on a paved path). This makes it ideal for families, casual travelers, or anyone who wants a quick nature break without strenuous hiking. There are viewing platforms at different levels, so you can admire the falls from multiple angles.
The area around the falls is rich with tropical foliage, including ferns, moss-covered rocks, and towering trees. The constant mist keeps everything vibrant and green, creating a mini rainforest microclimate. Birds and butterflies are often spotted, adding to the tranquil vibe.
📸 Great for Photos* The waterfall’s dramatic drop and surrounding greenery make it a fantastic photo spot. Early morning or late afternoon light enhances the beauty, and the mist often creates small rainbows—perfect for Instagram!
⚠️ Things to Keep in Mind Entry fee: Part of Doi Inthanon National Park (300 THB for foreigners, 50 THB for Thais). Slippery paths: Wear sturdy shoes, as rocks near the falls can be wet. Best time to visit: June-November (rainy season) for the strongest flow, though it’s impressive year-round.
Final Verdict: A Must-See if Visiting Doi Inthanon Wachirathan Waterfall is not just a quick stop—it’s a highlight of Doi Inthanon. Whether you’re road-tripping through the national park or just want a dose of nature, this waterfall delivers power, beauty, and accessibility in one package.

Read moreWachirathan Waterfall was one of the highlights of our day trip to Doi Inthanon. We stopped by in the morning, and it was breathtaking from the moment we arrived. The waterfall cascades powerfully down a tall cliff, sending mist into the air and creating beautiful rainbows when the sun hits it right. The path from the parking lot to the main viewing area is short and easy, which made it super convenient for everyone in the family.
We stood at the base for a while just taking in the view and the roar of the water. There’s something really calming and energizing about it at the same time. There’s also a trail that leads you up to a higher viewpoint where you can see more of the surrounding forest and falls. It’s not a difficult climb, but do wear shoes with grip—the rocks can get slippery.
There are food stalls and simple restrooms near the entrance, and while it’s not a place you’d stay at for hours, even spending 30–45 minutes here felt refreshing. We didn’t get to swim (it’s not allowed), but the cool mist alone was enough to beat the heat.
If you’re heading to Doi Inthanon, definitely make time for this stop. It’s easily one of the most photogenic waterfalls we’ve seen...
