We stopped at Mae Kachan Hot Springs during our drive from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai, and it turned out to be one of our favorite unscheduled pauses. Located right off the highway in Moo 6, Pha Soet Phatthana Village, the spot is a popular rest stop—complete with cafes, souvenir shops, and stalls selling fresh fruit, snacks, and souvenirs.
The highlight is the natural hot spring pools, where boiling water gushes from the ground at around 90°C—hot enough to cook eggs in just a few minutes. We bought a few eggs (chicken and quail) and had fun boiling them right there on the spot. A quirky and memorable experience!
While the main hot spring is too hot for dipping, there’s a smaller diverted stream where the temperature is just right for soaking your feet. It felt great to give our tired legs a warm soak after hours on the road. There were even foot-soak setups offered by nearby shops if you wanted to make it a little more indulgent.
The facilities were basic but decent. There was no entrance fee, just a small charge for using the restrooms. The area was bustling but still relaxing, with friendly vendors and fellow travelers stopping for a break.
It’s not a destination you’ll spend hours at, but as a quick and unique roadside stop, it’s well worth pulling over for. Definitely a fun way to break up...
Read moreA tourist trap in the nicest sense of the word. A rest point between Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai that is inundated with mini vans taking tourist groups from one city to another.
The hot spring's claim to fame is as the name would suggest, and vendors offer to selll eggs at the site of the got spring (3 eggs for 20 baht).
There are in excess of 15 stores selling souvenirs, shirts, hats, and silver amongst other items, but nothing that one can't find in any other market in Chiang Mai, there are no products particularly unique or famed from this location.. other than the eggs that one should boil for 10 minutes no matter what the vendor says.
There is some level of splashingof hot water as it is a spring but as long as one maintains some level of awareness and distance, the chance of a small burn in minimal.
5 minutes is not enough to time to boil the egg in the hot spring, unless one prefers very soft boiled eggsm I...
Read moreGood place to stop and rest on the drive between Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, as it’s at the halfway point. Water was much too hot to bathe your feet but I’m told that normally it’s not quite this hot. So maybe just one of those things... bad timing. Would be nice if they offered rooms where you could mix the hot water with cooler water for bathing but I didn’t see it. I have found it at other hot springs in Chiang Rai. Lots of trinkets and jewelry for sale but I’m not really into that anyway. Can also buy eggs to boil in the hot spring pool (20 Baht) if you’re looking for something to do while here. Some restaurants but I didn’t eat here so I can’t say how they were. In general nothing special but still good to stop and...
