Doi Mae Salong, located in northern Thailand’s Chiang Rai province, is famous for its stunning tea plantations, cool climate, and rich cultural history. Here’s a quick guide to tea plantations in Doi Mae Salong:

History & Background

Originally settled by Chinese Kuomintang (KMT) soldiers fleeing China after the civil war, Doi Mae Salong has a strong Yunnanese influence.

The region was once known for opium cultivation, but in the 1980s, the Thai government encouraged a shift to tea farming.

Today, it is a major center for high-quality oolong tea production.

Tea Varieties Grown

Oolong Tea (especially No. 12 and No. 17) – The most famous tea here, known for its floral and smooth taste.

Green Tea – Some plantations also grow high-altitude green tea.

Pu-erh Tea – Though more common in Yunnan, some farmers produce fermented tea varieties.

Best Tea Plantations to Visit

101 Tea Plantation – One of the largest and most famous tea estates in the area, offering tea tasting, guided tours, and panoramic views.

Wang Put Tan Tea Plantation – Another well-known plantation with high-quality oolong and beautiful surroundings.

Tea Tasting & Buying

Most plantations offer free tea tastings.

Popular purchases include loose-leaf teas, compressed tea cakes, and tea-related souvenirs.

Best Time to Visit

November to February – The cool season offers pleasant weather, misty mornings, and beautiful views.

Tea harvests take place throughout the year, but winter months provide a great atmosphere for...

After my visit to the Mae Salong, I stop at the 101 Tea Plantation and is impressed by the beauty of the place and hospitality of the people. Amazingly, after several generations living in Thailand, the decedents of the former Kuomintang solders can strike conversation with me in fluent Mandarin Chinese. I ask who would provide financial support to them, mainland China or Taiwan, one lady says it's the latter. It seems to make sense. I say that after all, we are all Chinese, speaking and writing in the same language, no matter where we are settled. She nods. Different from another prestigious and highly showy tea plantation, this one offers tea products and snack foods that you can purchase. Highly...

CHIANG RAI MINI GUIDE! Thailand’s stretch of far north is one of the prettiest regions of the country, home to spectacular temples, tea plantations, night markets and incredible viewpoints. SAVE this for your future trip! PLACES TO VISIT 101 TEA PLANTATION This sweeping plantation boasts a spectacular panorama of rolling green tea hills. Visitors are invited to walk the tea fields, pick tea leaves and sit down for a tea tasting. BAAN DAM The House of Black and White is the creation of local artist, a museum that houses contemporary art pieces. CHOU FONG TEA PLANTATION A larger tea plantation located in the Mae Chan District. There are several viewpoints to stop at as you drive through, and the views are breathtaking. LALITTA CAFÉ Technically, this is a restaurant, but the fairytale gardens make it more of an experience. The mystical fog, waterfall and vibrant fauna look straight out of a storybook. NIGHT MARKET It’s not the largest night market in Thailand, but it’s still one of my favorites. The food options are plentiful. WAT HUAY PLA KUNG This soaring temple complex sits on a hilltop, home to the Goddess of Mercy and her majestic white dragons. WAT RONG KUHN Known affectionately as the White Temple, this structure is incredibly ornate in its imagery, and everything is designed in white with flecks of silver. WAT RONG SEUR TEN The Blue Temple is designed with a vibrant blue and gold exterior, and the surreal interior blues seem to glow around a massive white Buddha. WAT SANG KAEW PHOTHIYAN A one-hour drive from Chiang Rai, Wat Sang Kaew Phothiyan is a newer temple bursting with color and detail. WHERE TO STAY @anantara_goldentriangle This sprawling mountainside sanctuary sits perched above the Ruak and Mekong Rivers surrounded by lush jungle and bamboo forest. The resort overlooks views of Laos, Myanmar & Thailand, the three countries that make up the Golden Triangle. PLACES TO EAT Barrab Restaurant, Cat ‘n a Cup Café, Chivit Thamma da Coffee House, Crepe Corner, Kunda Cafe @thailandinsider #chiangrai #whitetemple #thailandtravel #amazingnewchapters #amazingthailand
