Prasat Muangkao — Attraction in Nakhon Ratchasima Province

Prasat Muang kao is a quaint little ruin, which is located at korat sub District, Sung Noen district. in Nakhon Ratchasima province. This Khmer sanctuary was built in the 12th to 13th century C.E. in the Khmer Bayon style. it was likely built during the reign of King Jayavaraman VII of the Khmer Empire as a hospital or "Arokayasala" in Mahayana Buddhism. It faces east, and a single main Prasat built in laterite blocks and sandstone. A library hall (Bannalai) located just south of the msin prasat tower entrance, with its entrance facing to the west. All these buildings are enclosed by a boundary wall also of laterite blocks.

The ruin can be accessed from the current Wat directly to the north of the site, or from an access road directly south though poorly marked which offers better parking options.

The Wat also has an interesting shrine dedicated by the looks of it to JayavarmanVII and his principle queen, but as it is not the ruin, so I didn't include...

Amphoe Sung Noen, Nakhon Ratchasima. Location N 14.90824° E 101.83248° Prasat Maung Kao or Arokayasala was a medical center built by the order of Khmer ruler King Jayavarman VII (1181 – 1218). There were 102 medical stations built throughout the empire during his reign. They all have similar layout with a small, simple tower set in a rectangular enclosure with an eastern entrance. There is a square pond located to the northeast corner.
