solo traveller, check below for my personal experience and guide - how to get there from Mae Hong Son town center: 1. yellow songthew in Mae Hong Son Food Market, they depart 9am and 2pm (but for my case, as less customers, they delay until 4pm, fee 80b one way) , no return trip in same day so pls prepare your stay - 2. by motocycle driver (I got one contact as below) 450 baht one way, the road is hill-up and 55km so I think this price is okie (I took this option), pls ensure you dont have much baggage as the the motobike is unsafe when up-hill ; 3. Tuktuk driver: 1000 baht ; 4. rent your motocycle and enjoy the ride (depart early as the road is very up-hill and sharp curve) - stay: very high demand in nov-jan period, rent tent as 300b (single tent) and 400b (double tent) or book the homestay near by. The date I came, they are full-booked but luckily I managed to have one tent. for tent, pls call phone number of the facebook page as below to ensure your slot - facility: have public restrooms and bathroom, but not so clean and no hot water; they have food stall to sell food or grilling tool - tips: not many food options (better to bring your own food), bring a mini-light with battery as its super dark at night and dont have public light; bring warm clothes as its cold at night, bring power bank as no electric source provide - other cost: entrance ticket 100b for foreigner and 10b for local, bamboo boat fee 150b per trip - if you are lucky, early morning you can see the foggy layer on the lake (i was not that lucky) - the next day i left there via yellow songthew at the entrance area (ticket booth) , they should pick me at 11am but the actual time pick up is 12pm (noon) :)

There are 2 main activities to do here… 1) Take a bamboo raft ride to the middle of the lake to see the beautiful scenery and you might also see the mist floating above the water during cold temperatures such as the winter season (December) & rainy season (September) in Thailand. Each ride costs 150 THB. It is based on a first come first serve basis and you just go on the day itself. There is no advance booking of tickets. They would start in the early morning about 6am. 2) Camping. There is a park where you will need to pay entrance fee (100 THB) to enter and set up your tent. There are also some single room style accommodation and all the rooms have private toilet & bathroom. Most of them have no sink / no flush toilet system (400 to 600 THB). Some have both sink and flush toilet (700 THB to 1000 THB and up). As camping is the main activity here , the accommodations here are under demand. Hence , very few are put up on hotel websites. You can try to add their contact number (via LINE app) or Facebook from google maps. I would recommend Pala coffee homestay (700 THB and up) or another bunch of bungalow type houses near the bamboo raft pier. (1000 THB and up) There are some local food stalls (with English menu) and shops beside the road lining the accommodations. There is nothing much else to do here besides camping and the bamboo raft ride so 1 or 2 nights is enough. To get here , you can take the yellow pickup truck (songtheow) from Mae hong son town at 11.30am. It takes about half an hour to reach here. There are 2 timings that the songtheow will come to pick up passengers from Pang Oung. Around 6am and 12pm.

'Pang Oung' (ปางอุ๋ง) or 'The Royal Forest Project at Pang Tong 2' is located 40 km away from Mae Hong Son town. The deep green glittering reservoir that shine brightly with the sun, home of a pair of swans (a symbol of true love, a long-lasting happy relationship with a partner) became a signature of Pang Oung The enormous evergreen pine trees forest is one of the romantic scene in the north of Thailand, the famous wedding photoshoot site. Along the bank of the reservoir in the national park reserve as the camping area and usually packed with people in winter especially by the end of the year Pang Oung is a peaceful and calming forest that can soothe your mind, hidden away in the mountain. The path to get there was not easy either, the short twists, sharp turns, and high slop made me really dizzy while driving The national park has the border next to Myanmar or Burma, the path to get there were off the grid, muddy rough terrain road, the scene that I debut my first ever fall there! (Entrance Fee Thai Adult 20THB Child 10THB / Foreigner Adult 100THB Child 50THB, Open Daily) *The ticket can be used to entrance Tham Pla (Fish Cave) and Pha Suea Waterfall

Pang Oung Pang Oung is one of the Royal Initiative projects by HM Queen Sirikit for highland development. The place sometimes is referred to “Ruam Thai” on maps and signs. It is a Shan Minority Village where it has been developed with modern agricultural projects. Pang Ung lake has the area large reservoir on the high hill and pine trees is lined a beautifully. Pang Ung means accommodation edge reservoir. In the morning, Many visitors will not miss photographed the sunrise reflecting water through the pine trees and mist rising above water which is extremely beautiful images. As a result, Pang Ung become hot attractions and romantic well as receive dubbed as “the Switzerland of Thailand”.

I would say that I’m really lucky to catch the sea of the mist. The view is breathtaking beautiful and the clear air and chill whether will make you feel so peaceful and fully embrace the beauty of the nature - the pine tree, the crystal clear lake and the greenery view. The weather is quite cold like 5-10 degree so please wear winter wear with full winter gears. The paddling boat cost 150 baht per 2 person which took around 20 ministers. The activity during the sunset is highly recommended! Don’t forget to walk around the lake to enjoy the spectacular different point of views of Pang Oung.

A very charming village in the high mountains north of Mae Hong Son, close to the Myanmar border. Called ‘little Switzerland’ because of its cool, humid weather and pine trees. Camping in the National Park , next to the large reservoir is popular October-April. December-January the place is very popular and very lively and has a vibrant walking street in the evening time. Lots of restaurants, coffee shops, food stalls. May-October it is quiet but still very much worth visiting. As well as the camp site there are many resorts and guest houses.
