Mai Ngam Beach — Attraction in Phang-nga Province

Mai Ngam beach on North Surin Island is truly an amazing place!

Strongly suggest that one avoids booking the 1Day trip to Surin island, in order to avoid the crowds of day travelers from Khaolak & Phuket.

Instead, choose to spend a minimum of 2Nights on the island, staying in either the national parks bungalows, or the national parks tents.

We have stayed in the tents for three times now, (the 3rd time being this April'18). Of course the tents offers very basic accommodation, with shared communal toilet/bath facilities, and added to this is the poor service quality of the national parks staff...but the natural surroundings make it all worth the stay.

The view & setting of Mai Ngam is spectacular! You can swim right off the beach with crystal waters and witness some small fish & coral life. The best snorkeling is done through one of the longtail boat trips booked through the tour company or directly through the national parks service.

From Mai Ngam beach, you can take a jungle walk, the trail leads you south over the mountain to the Royal Navy SARS camp, and then further south to the second National parks center at Chong Khad Beach. Do keep in mind that you have to walk back and the trail offers no lights or help points. Thus the walk is best done during the morning, taking 2-3hrs (per way), especially for families...

Surin islands on a budget.

Super recommended to come and stay at the camping at least 2 nights.

There are some local tour companies in Khuraburi who organise a package. I took it as I was travelling with my dad but you can do the same at a much cheaper rate and the companies don't really provide anything extra. If anything, the tents rented directly from the national park's camping are bigger and closer to the restaurants compared to those of the agencies.

The amount of food that comes with the package is the full set menu (3 meals a day) is just so exaggerated for a "normal" adult. And meals timing is just so early! In hindsight I would just use the agencies to buy the boat transfer ticket and get help with booking a tent in advance with the camping, then rent the tent, bed sets, snorkel equipment from the camping directly, plus the snorkel excursions, and order the right amount of food at the restaurant for cheaper. Most people did that and also brought food there.

The camping is wonderful, so many toilets and showers, and it's just a super quiet and relaxing place to be.

낮에도 밤에도 예쁜 마이응암!

쿠라부리 선착장에서 스피드 보트 타고 한시간, 중간에 목선으로 갈아타 십여분 정도 오면 도착하는 마이응암 해변. 아오청캇은 방갈로 위주고 마이응암은 텐트 위주라고 하더라고요. 저는 국립공원 텐트(하루 450밧)를 이용했기 때문에 마이응암에서 묵었습니다. VIP 텐트는 하루 2000밧이고 미리 예약해야 합니다. 훨씬 더 크고 에어컨도 사용 가능합니다.

마이응암에는 국립공원 텐트, 투어 회사 텐트, 본인 텐트 치는 곳 등으로 나뉘어 있어요. 본인 텐트 가져와서 야영 장소만 빌린다면 하루 80밧입니다.

텐트 바로 앞에 해변이 쭉 이어져 있는데, 물놀이하기 정말 좋은 깊이입니다. 특히 좀 많이 걸어가도 물 깊이가 그다지 깊지 않다는 게 좋아요. 그리고 해변에서도 물살이들을 많이 볼 수 있는 데다가 진짜 조금만 헤엄쳐 가면 중간중간 산호가 많은데, 거기서도 정말 물살이들 많이 볼 수 있어요.

바다 색이 너무 아름다워서 멍하니 보게 됩니다. 해변은 엄청 고운 흰 모래라서 신발 벗고 있어도 괜찮아요. 해변에서 바다 조금 걸어갈 때 자잘한 조개들 있으니 아쿠아슈즈 있으면 편합니다.

식당이 하나 있는데, 식당은 지정된 시간에만 열어요. 아침은 7시 30분부터 9시까지, 점심은 12시부터 14시까지, 저녁은 18시 30분부터 20시까지입니다. 식당에서 물이나 음료, 간단한 생필품을 파는데 이것들을 구입하기 위해서는 쿠폰이 있어야 합니다. 쿠폰은 인포데스크 옆에서 교환 가능합니다. 메뉴는 주로 태국식사 위주예요.

뜨거운 물이 식사시간에 제공되니 차를 타서 마시거나 커피를 타서 마실 수도 있고, 컵라면에 물을 부어 먹을 수도 있어요. 식사 시간 외에는 물이 안 끓어서 좀 식어 있긴 합니다.

아이스크림과 음료를 파는 매점도 있어요. 이곳도 마찬가지로 식사 시간에만 문을 엽니다.

세면장이나 샤워실, 화장실은 넉넉하게 있고 나쁘지 않습니다. 그러나 캠핑장이고 자연 속이니만큼 ㅋㅋ 어느 정도의 흐린눈은 필수입니다.

스노클링은 점심 시간에 오후 일정을 예약할 수 있고, 저녁 시간에 다음날 아침 일정을 예약할 수 있어요. 오전 스노클링은 9시, 오후 스노클링은 2시에 시작하며 약 3시간 정도 걸립니다. 금액은 1인 200밧입니다.

스노클 장비(핀, 스노클마스크, 구명조끼)는 수린섬 내부에서도 대여 가능합니다. 개인 장비가 있다면 가져오는 것이 제일 좋아요. 스노클링 포인트는 격일로 바뀌는데, 바다 안이 진짜 예뻐요ㅠㅜㅜ 내내 스노클링만 하다 갑니다. 스노클링 하루 두번 다녀오면 시간 순삭이네요.

해변에는 다양한 게, 곤충 등 여러 생물이 살고 있어요. 물에 들어가지 않고 해변만 산책해도 볼거리가 많아서 좋습니다. 그냥 바다 멍하니 보고만 있어도 너무 좋네요!

올해 2024년 마이응암은 4월 22일에 폐장한다고 합니다. 아오청캇은 좀 더 길게 하는 것 같아요.

수린 섬에 온다면, 간식거리나 과일 등을 먹을 것들을 챙겨오시면 좋습니다. 전기 사용이 제한적이니 보조 배터리도 용량 큰 것으로 챙기시고, 휴대용 선풍기도 챙기세요.

돗자리나 깔개 있으면 해변에 누워서 경치 즐기기 좋아요. 텐트 바닥은 그냥 맨바닥이니 허리 안 좋으신 분들은 깔개나 매트 준비하시면 좋아요. 아니면 국립공원에서 매트를 빌릴 수 있고 1박당 20밧입니다. 매트는 자주 세탁하지는 않는 것 같아요 ㅎㅎ 펴니까 좀 더러웠어요. 그래도 그 위에 긴 타올 깔고 자니 잘만했습니다.

더위에 취약하신 분들은 아이스박스 작은 거나 보냉보온텀블러 꼭 챙기세요. 얼음을 매일 살 수 있는데 아이스박스에 담아 두고 마시니 괜찮았어요.
