Small family run operation obviously you needn't pay 50thb to see the bats as you can see from the road and around.
However, kids are free, you get a sense of attraction as people are focused in one spot. You have a Google anchor to help with arranging taxis (ours took 3 adults and 1 child for 1000thb and waited for us to take us back), a bottle of water and access to beer.
For us on a tourism trip, this also feels like a great way to support the local economy in an area that is relatively quiet and I didn't feel at all unreasonable.
The bats themselves are a fascinating sight, we arrived at 1755 and they showed at 1830. The birds of prey arriving was a bonus sight and a good indicator of timing for the buffet.

Read moreWhat drew us to Hua Hin was the mass exodus of 2 million bats at sunset. The viewing point for Nayang Bay Cave was just a short ride from our hotel (Sofitel). We paid 500Baht per person for a van transfer, park entrance fees, plus bar snacks and fresh coconut juice. Binoculars were also provided.
We set off at 5.30pm and the bats were supposed to appear between 6 to 6.20pm. However, they appeared rather late that day, around 6.40pm, so it was almost dark by then. Also, the whole phenomenon usually took about 15 to 20 minutes, but it took only 5 minutes.
