A MUST-VISIT in Ratchaburi! So much more than a temple. Had an incredible time at Wat Khanom with my family. We visited the museum on the temple grounds, and it completely blew us away. It’s set in a gorgeous, traditional Thai-style house, which gives it such a special atmosphere.We learned so much, thanks to the wonderful student guides who were there to explain everything. Reading the history of each piece was fascinating. My only regret is that we missed the daily performance—we were so bummed! It only happens once a day. Pro-tip for future visitors: Plan your trip around the showtime so you don't miss out like we did! It was an amazing cultural experience. Can't wait to go back.

Wow place and attractive. Nang Yai Shadow Puppet Drama at Wat Khanon Temple. That’s one of Thailand’s finest and most admired treasures, showing off many intrinsic values of Thai art. The beautiful and elaborate fretwork design of the puppets meticulously carved by master craftsmen. Can be manipulated to portray all kinds of mood and character as required by the storyline, verse and recitations, dialogue, chorusâ€ĶThe artistic feel create by Theas moods and movement allows the audience to gain a complete grasp of the storyline. Nice place to study Thai Art. Nang Yai Shadow Puppet Drama has been awarded UNESCO. Daily open from 08.00 a.m. to 17.50 p.m. Free entry

“Nang Yai Wat Khanon” (grand shadow play at Wat Khanon Temple) was built during the reign of King Chulalongkorn or Rama V., while Prevost Sattha Soonthorn (Luang Pou Klom) initiated the idea of carving the leather for the shadow play.

The Prevost came up with the idea of increasing the size of the existing shadow play and thus he invited Master Ang, Craftsman - Jad, Ja and Puang to join his project. The first set of the creation was “Hanuman Tawai Waen” and later 9 more were created, with the current number of 313 leather pieces. The carved leather for the grand shadow play is the temple's long-preserved treasure. This place meanwhile is the only temple with its own play along with the performance and complete performing group under the temple patronage.

The temple converted its old prayer hall, which was built in the style of Thai traditional house, into the museum. Located next to Maeklong River, the museum is around 10 kilometer-away from Photharam District. Assistant Professor Somjai Nimlek was in charge of the museum's design while Associate Professor Pongsak Arayangkul was responsible for the museum's interior design. The museum features the exhibition on the grand shadow play which is more than 100 years old and still in perfect condition. Most of the characters in the grand shadow play are from the story of Ramayana. The exhibition also presents the background and origin of the grand shadow play along with the carving process of the play's leather pieces.

A MUST-VISIT in Ratchaburi! So much more than a temple. Had an incredible time at Wat Khanom with my family. We visited the museum on the temple grounds, and it completely blew us away. It’s set in a gorgeous, traditional Thai-style house, which gives it such a special atmosphere.We learned so much, thanks to the wonderful student guides who were there to explain everything. Reading the history of each piece was fascinating. My only regret is that we missed the daily performance—we were so bummed! It only happens once a day.
