Waterfall Cave Soda — Attraction in Roi Et Province

Fortunately I was able to visit this canyon with the small ( but wide) waterfall back in October 2021 and revisited September 2023. There was certainly more water falling off the cliff the second time. Beautiful natural area.The steep steps going down to the falls and ravine were “do-able”. At that time there were two major areas with water falling over the cliff- the 2nd one being the main tourist site with the “cave alter”. There are plenty of gorgeous views of the green valley and lake below and the Phu Pham mountain ranges in the distance- including the Wat Pha Nam Thip Thep chedi pagoda can be seen.

Overcrowded on weekends. Not what I would call a tranquil and spiritual place.

We came on a Sunday afternoon, and it was full of families and their kids. Most came here to use the natural pool below the waterfall as a swimming hole and with that there was also the usual squealing and screaming noises that kids make when water is near. The waterfall doesn’t carry a lot of water, it’s more of a rain shower over a cliff with a hollow walkway below it. Although there was a monk present and chanting to a few worshipers, we didn’t get a sense of this being a significant spiritual place (given the noise). Maybe it’s better on weekdays. แหล่งท่องเที่ยวน้ำตกถ้ำโสดา เริ่มบูรณะเป็นแหล่งท่องเที่ยวเมื่อวันที่ 14 กุมภาพันธ์ 2540 โดย มีหลวงปู่กาล ปภากโล เป็นผู้ริเริ่มก่อสร้างและเป็นผู้ดูแลแหล่งท่องเที่ยวน้ำตกถ้ำโสดา ซึ่งเป็นพระภิกษุสงฆ์ที่จำพรรษาอยู่ในที่พักสงฆ์น้ำตกถ้ำโสดา เหตุที่มีการตั้งชื่อว่า “น้ำตกถ้ำโสดา” เดิมมีเรื่องเล่าอยู่ว่าในสมัยสร้างพระธาตุพนม มีสองสามี-ภรรยาคู่หนึ่ง สามีชื่อ “โส” และภรรยาชื่อ “ดา” อยากที่จะเอาเงินและทองไปใส่ในพระธาตุพนม ก็ต้องเดินทางไปผ่านป่าเลยไปเจอถ้ำแห่งหนึ่งก็เลยใช้เป็นที่พักอาศัยระหว่าง เดินทาง และต่อมาก็ใช้ถ้ำแห่งนี้เป็นที่พักอาศัยระหว่างออกไปหาอาหารป่า เมื่อเหนื่อยล้าก็จะกลับมาพักที่ถ้ำแห่งนี้เป็นประจำทุกวัน จนชาวบ้านได้เรียกชื่อว่า “ถ้ำโสดา” และจากที่มีน้ำตกอยู่ในตัวแหล่งท่องเที่ยวนี้ด้วยจึงได้ตั้งชื่อเป็น “น้ำตกถ้ำโสดา” และได้บูรณะเป็นแหล่งท่องเที่ยวและสำนักสงฆ์จนถึงปัจจุบัน

พื้นที่โดยทั่วไปของแหล่งท่องเที่ยวน้ำตกถ้ำโสดา เป็นพื้นที่ป่าเขียว และตั้งอยู่ในบริเวณที่ราบสูงที่เรียกว่าภูเขียว เป็นพื้นที่ส่วนหนึ่งของเขตห้ามล่าสัตว์ป่าถ้ำผาน้ำทิพย์ มีหินทรายวางสลับซับซ้อน กันรวมทั้งผาหินขนาดใหญ่ บริเวณใกล้เคียงมีอ่างเก็บน้ำห้วยพุงใหญ่ ตัวแหล่งท่องเที่ยวน้ำตกถ้ำโสดามีทรัพยากรทางธรรมชาติที่อุดมสมบูรณ์ทั้ง ทรัพยากรน้ำ ป่าไม้ สัตว์ป่าบางชนิด และที่สำคัญมีเจดีย์หินที่เกิดขึ้นเองตามธรรมชาติโดยมีฐานที่ตั้งขนาดเล็ก มาก แต่สามารถตั้งอยู่ได้ถือเป็นความมหัศจรรย์ทางธรรมชาติ มีพระพุทธรูปศากยมุนีโคดมประดิษฐานในศาลาที่พักสงฆ์ไว้เป็นที่สักการบูชาของ นักท่องเที่ยว มีน้ำตกให้นักท่องเที่ยวได้เล่นน้ำ มีถ้ำโสดาแต่ปัจจุบันปากถ้ำถูกปิดเนื่องจากมีหินขนาดใหญ่ล่นลงมาทับปากทาง เข้าถ้ำ จึงเหมาะเป็นแหล่งท่องเที่ยวทางธรรมชาติสำหรับเป็นที่พักผ่อนหย่อนใจของนัก ท่องเที่ยว และยังมีสถานที่ปฏิบัติธรรมในสำนักสงฆ์เพราะเป็นสถานที่ที่เงียบสงบ มีความเป็นธรรมชาติ...
