Starting the New Year in flow, and fresh ✨
A great place to visit if you are doing a bike trip around Phuket.
📍Tonsai Waterfall (Ton Sai Waterfall) is a leisurely spot in the northeastern part of Phuket. Although it’s inland and far from the beaches, you easily appreciate the scenery along the road from Thalang Town’s junction heading to the falls. This 3-km-long road has delightful rural views and farmland – it gets even get better once you're within the green virgin forest and its peaceful surroundings.
Ton Sai is more accessible compared to the nearby Bang Pae Waterfall, but it's not as big or impressive. Still, it's a great cool spot for a day out from the hot Phuket sun.
If you're interested in tropical plants, you'll enjoy seeing the rare white-backed palms. First discovered in Thailand, this elegant palm has beautiful big circular leaves that are shaped like a fan, with a green upper surface and white underneath.
Tonsai Waterfall is a nice place for birdwatching as the rainforest is home colourful local birds, such as the red-billed malkoha, the greater racket-tailed drongo and red-backed sea eagle. Some of the many migratory birds you might spot here include the Siberian blue robin and forest wagtail.
The waterfall is small, and you can go early to sit down under the water fountain.
We climbed until the top, and it was slippery a bit, so be cautious when climbing, bring sport shoes with good grip and stay low when climbing the rocks, do it slowly.
Enjoy the experience.
Highly recommend to explore while in...
Read moreNot very accessible if looking to do the full walk!
I arrived in the morning via taxi hoping to be able to walk the jungle by myself but had a look at the track aware of snakes and decided to ask for a guide - which turns out apparently you have to have!
I got a fantastic ranger as a guide who shared knowlege about the forest and spotted a few snakes that I wouldn’t have noticed otherwise… Very glad to have the guide. 1500baht for one way - so if you plan to do the full track from Ton Sai waterfall to the Gibbon centre don’t bring your own vehicle!
They offer a 900baht option for a 3km loop that returns to Tin Sai waterfall, however, and this would probably be enough to see some wildlife.
The track itself isn’t so much overgrown (I’ve been in far worse) but there are a lot of false leads so I highly recommend getting a guide - super helpful and you learn some local knowledge too! It was about 6km and took 2-2.5 hours with just myself and a guide. There’s some waterholes along the way too so bring your bathers!
Overall, a fantastic experience. But I had a nightmare with taxi prices to and from seeing as I was staying in Phuket Town. I don’t know what other option there would be for the...
Read moreTropical rainforests. Jungles. You say it, and you imagine emerald green trees and bushes, which serve as an object of admiration to you and as a home to some animals, birds, reptiles and insects. But when you come there, you are impressed far more, than your imagination can do. I never expected to see soooo huge plants, especially those which I usually saw as potted plants at my home country. We had a very nice experience having visited Ton Sai Waterfall and the territory around it, which is a part of the forest. Mark August even had a shower under the waterfall streams, as water is very warm there. And also, it’s quite a picturesque place, I must admit. After seeing the waterfall itself we went to wander around the park and that was a perfect thing to do to have good impressions. The stairs, hidden by the huge leaves, lead you to the secret places, where you feel so small, though closely connected to the...
