ตำนานความเป็นมาของคำชะโนด เดิมสถานที่คำชะโนดตั้งอยู่ในความดูแลของ ตำบลบ้านม่วง จังหวัดอุดรธานี จากอดีตจนถึงปัจจุบันจากตำนานการเล่าขานสืบกันมา ซึ่งในช่วงที่ไม่มีการบันทึกเป็นลายลักษณ์อักษร มาถึงช่วงที่ได้มีการบันทึกประวัติความเป็นมาแบบลายลักษณ์อักษรโดยการสืบค้นจากการเล่าขานจากคนรุ่นก่อนมาเป็นช่วงๆสืบต่อกันมา

คำชะโนดตำนานกล่าวว่า เมืองคำชะโนดนี้ได้เล่าขานสืบต่อกันมารุ่นแล้วรุ่นเล่า จนถึงปัจจุบัน เมืองคำชะโนดตั้งอยู่ทิศตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือของตัวเมืองอำเภอบ้านดุง จังหวัดอุดรธานี ปัจจุบันอยู่ในเขตพื้นที่บ้านโนนเมืองหมู่ที่ 11 ตำบลบ้านม่วง อำเภอบ้านดุง จังหวัดอุดรธานี ซึ่งได้มีผู้คนย้ายถิ่นที่อยู่มาอาศัยเดิม เดินทางมาก่อสร้างครอบครัวที่บ้านโนนเมือง ระยะทางห่างจากอำเภอบ้านดุงประมาณ 21 กิโลเมตร พื้นที่รอบๆบริเวณเป็นแหล่งน้ำคลำ มีต้นไม้เกิดขึ้นภายในบริเวณเนื้อที่ประมาณ 20 ไร่ ต้นไม้ชนิดนี้เรียกว่าต้นชะโนด มีลักษณะพิเศษคล้ายต้นตาล แต่ขนาดลำต้นสูงยาวเรียวเล็กกว่าต้นตาล ขนาดก็พอๆกับต้นมะพร้าว ก้านใบจะมีหนามแหลมยาวคม ใบจะมีลักษณะคล้ายใบตาล เวลาต้องลมจะเกิดเสียงและวังเวง ต้นชะโนดมีผลเป็นพวงลูกเล็กเท่าพวงองุ่นเล็ก บริโภคไม่ได้ ถ้าบริโภคจะมีอาการคันปาก ต้นชะโนดเป็นพืชที่เกิดจากธรรมชาตินับเป็นเวลาหลายพันปีคนรุ่นเก่าก่อนได้เรียกพืชชนิดนี้สืบทอดกันมาเรียกว่า ต้นชะโนด และเชื่อว่าเมืองชะโนด สันนิษฐานว่าคงจะเรียกตามชื่อต้นชะโนด

สำหรับสัตว์และพืชที่อยู่ในบริเวณที่แห่งนี้จะมีพืชหลากหลายชนิด เช่น ไผ่ หวายน้ำ ผักกูด ผักชีช้าง หญ้าปล้อง หญ้าไซ บัวบก(ผักหนอก) ต้นเดื่อ ต้นไทร ต้นหว้า พืชที่กล่าวมานี้ ในอดีตที่ผ่านมามีจำนวนมากมาย แต่ปัจจุบันมีเหลืออยู่ให้เห็นไม่มาก ในอดีตจนถึงปัจจุบันจากการเล่าขานสืบต่อมามีสัตว์นานาชนิดทั้งสัตว์บกและสัตว์น้ำ และจำพวกครึ่งบกครึ่งน้ำซึ่งคนรุ่นคุณปู่คุณย่าหลายชั่วอายุ เรียกบริเวณนี้ ว่า ป่าช้างดงเสือ เพราะในอดีตที่ผ่านมามีสัตว์เกือบทุกประเภทอาศัยอยู่ ปัจจุบันทั้งพืชและสัตว์เหล่านั้น ได้สูญพันธ์ไปเป็นส่วนมากมีที่เหลือให้เห็นอยู่บางชนิด มีจำนวนน้อย คำชะโนด วังนาคินทร์ แดนนาคา หรือเมืองชะโนด มีเรื่องเล่าสืบต่อกันมาว่า เจ้าศรีสุทโธ เป็นพญานาค ครองเมืองหนองกระแสครึ่งหนึ่ง อีกครึ่งหนึ่งก็เป็นพญานาคเช่นเดียวกัน ชื่อสุวรรณนาค เป็นผู้ครองอีกครึ่งหนึ่งต่างฝ่ายก็มีบริวารฝ่ายละ 5,000 เหมือนกัน ทั้ง 2 ฝ่ายอยู่ด้วยกันอย่างมีความสุข ไม่มีปัญหาทะเลาะกัน มีความรักสามัคคีเป็นน้ำหนึ่งใจเดียวกัน เป็นเพื่อนตายกันมาโดยตลอด ทั้ง 2 ฝ่ายได้ตกลงกันอยู่ข้อหนึ่งว่า ถ้าฝ่ายใดฝ่ายหนึ่งออกไปล่าสัตว์นำมาเป็นอาหาร อีกฝ่ายหนึ่งไม่ต้องออกไป เพราะเกรงว่าบริวารไพร่พลจะมีการกระทบกระทั่งกันอาจจะเกิดการรบราฆ่าฟันกัน แต่ก็ตั้งกฏิกาอีกว่า ถ้าฝ่ายที่ออกไปล่าสัตว์ ให้นำเนื้อสัตว์มาแบ่งปันกัน ฝ่ายละเท่าๆกัน แบ่งครึ่งต่อครึ่งทั้ง 2...
