Summary: nice easy hike for the whole family to the pool at the base of the falls. Can go further upriver for those that are more adventurous.
Details:easy to get to at the end of the Diego Martin highway, relatively well signposted (for Trinidad 😄). Natural parking lot at the entrance. Short uphill walk followed by a walkway to the pool at the base of the falls. Can get quite crowded on a holiday or weekend. For the more adventurous, there is a trail up the right side which will take you to the top of the falls, and a jumping off spot (looks like a 30-40 foot drop, the pool is deep enough for it to be safe). This trail is not suitable for small children, people with mobility issues, or animals, requires using hands and legs to go up. For the even more adventurous, you can go further upriver once at the top of the falls, there are two more waterfalls and a couple of nice pools. You can go up the river itself if you don't mind getting wet (safer option for nervous people) or you can stay dry by going along the side of the mountain, there's a sort of trail. We went in February, dry season, so water flow not too strong. Since the gorge at the top is fairly narrow in places, might be a bit more challenging/risky in the rainy season when the water flow is stronger. There's a guide from the area if you want, Brian Bradshaw, 479-0116. Don't know what he charges, we went with a hiking group. He will also give you a little history...
Read moreIf you are looking for the easiest hike in Trinidad, this is it! After parking by the car park area, it's no more than 10 minutes' walk. There's only 1 uphill walk, and that's it. The path is mostly concrete with some areas fallen but easily manageable. If you are looking for a challenge, you can go above the falls to where there are 3 smaller falls and a taller one at the end. But beware, this is not for the faint of heart as it's very narrow and very technical. You can easily slip and fall if you are not careful. Once you overcome those hurdles, you will be treated by several pools to bathe and explore. I will give it a 1 out of 10 for the blue basin falls and maybe 5 or 6 for above the falls due to its...
Read moreBlue Basin and it's waterfall is a serene little paradise hidden in the Diego Martin Hill. Once there you tend to get captivated by natures captivating beauty, the sound of the water running and the crisp air smell makes you forget everything else.
There's a parking area at the foot of the road where the basin is located. A bit higher up the road leads to a broken but safe enough trail to the waterfall. If you're new to the area, the trail has been corroded by the natural water flow so be careful. It's always better to not go alone. And when the pandemic has subsided you can try trekking up through the natural flow of the river. It's simply...
