Attended a group tour of 4 persons with Videsh from Bush Bush Tours in July 2024. The weather was beautiful, clear skies and a perfectly high tide to take the boat out into the swamp. The swamp was teeming with wildlife and the tour guide did his best to point out the different birds and educate us about the mangrove and the persons involved with making Nariva Swamp a Sanctuary for animals of all kinds. We kept an eye out for the elusive manatee and howler monkeys but alas we didn't catch a glimpse. However, as the day wore on, the boat came to a stop and we proceeded on foot through the forest where we finally caught the amazing sight of a family of capuchin monkeys having their lunch in the palm trees. It was a day well spent learning and discovering this part of Trinidad. I would recommend it to all. The tour was approximately 3 hours long. There is a washroom area on site where the tour starts. Please wear long pants, sneakers, long sleeved clothing, hats etc and use bug repellent since there are many mosquitos.

We went on a daytime boat tour and hike on the island. It was a very very hot day, with almost no breeze, and because of this we think that’s why we did not see any wildlife. Our guide did a good of of explaining the nature and the history of the place and taught us lots about the trees. Sad we didn’t see any monkeys, but that’s nature sometimes. Appreciate the serendipity of the experience.

Nariva swamp is very close to the eastern sea boarder of Trinidad. The main road runs on the eastern side of the swamp. It is easy to miss a lot of historic details as one approaches the swamp, such as old agricultural estates, cocoa estates. The swamp has a diversity of flora and fauna. The main flora is the large mangrove roots. There are small trickles of water or rivers out of the swamp which provide for an interaction of crabs, birds and other fauna.

The bioluminescence phenomena with animals are present in one of the rivers which drains out...

We used to camp here for as long as i can remember. First time we took a boat so much up river though. The camping experience is amazing but lately the prices are ridiculous. For the carnival long weekend a camping spot is tt$400 plus tt$20 for each person per day, for that you get no facilities, none. Not even those portable toilets provided. Been camping there over 20 years, since it was free, to when the started charging by car, to when they started charging by person but now this last time is also the last straw. Lovely place, camp nearby...
