3/5 because here has SO much potential. Let's start with the route to this amazing scenic point. The road isn't the greatest, firstly you have to pass a make-shift wooden bridge which I hope will be made into something more permanent soon, but it's been like this for the past 4 years so I don't see any change happening anytime soon. As you pass the bridge the road is more or less scenic up to the light house, the road lacks signs for first timers, so make sure you have your GPS-Guide up and loaded.
The actual light house isn't in commission anymore but the structure is still there, the surrounding areas have so much potential to be great but Trinis don't take care of anything unfortunately. There were bathroom facilities but they are no longer operational, the seating area is missing tables so forget all of that and head straight to the cliff-site (about 20 seconds walk past the lighthouse).
The cliff-site is the true beauty of this spot, the landforms and the water give that beautiful, island, tropical, edge of the world magical shot. It's calm and serene and most times locals from the area will be here as well but it's seldom crowded.
Visit here, but don't expect much and don't leave anything but memories. We have enough...
Read moreUnfortunately when we went (10-Dec-2020) it was closed for renovations, and the workmen would not let us in even though it was a Sunday (kudos to them). As can be seen, the light has been removed. The day was saved however, as there is a short trail (2-3 minutes) on the left (seaward) side of the road behind a (useless) chain that takes you to the coast, where you can get a view of the lighthouse from a different angle. You can also take a walk further westward. The beach is very rocky, not really suitable for swimming. If you like geology there's great evidence of sedimentary deposition, including some really cool quartz layer interbedding as can be seen in one of the pictures, and subsequent tectonic activity that now has the layers vertical instead of horizontal. Fascinating, as Dr. Spock would...
Read moreJuly 2022 It is extremely disappointing that taxpayers funds were used to renovate this location. Yet, the main gate remains closed to visitors, the fence was cut for visitor entry, bathroom facilities are no longer available, no access to a freshly paved carpark, there is an empty security post but Trinidad and Tobago Police Service drive by periodically.
This site has great potential for at least historical tourism- the lighthouse story, the airstrip, streetside food vendors and artisans.... What are we waiting on to capitalize on this opportunity?
That being said, visitors go for the blowhole, wave and fishing experience. Astrophotographers go for the magnificent night sky views. For these, the visit...
