Very photogenic. And other worldly. Some describe this as run down/needing maintenance. Either the Tunisians have done that or more likely, this is the set of a town at the outer rim of the galaxy and should not be pristine? This is not a place to come to for peace and quiet. The locals offering camel rides, quads, etc make sure of that. Do seek out one of the guys making sand bread. It's an authentic-ish experience, and you get tasty hot bread for 1 or 2 dinar (tea also 1 dinar).
One tip - If you do decide to go for any of these rides, do not pay before you start, unless you are happy for them to cut your trip short! We weren't there for that, so tried to ignore them. But the price kept going down to stoke our interest, until 20 Dinar (£5) for two quads for the four of us for 15 minutes was agreed. After 6 minutes, that was it. Finished. Our protests got us a grudging quick second circuit of the dunes, but not the town. That was still well short of the agreed time, and as we were about the last to arrive that day, it wasn't as if there was a queue waiting for it. Had I not paid already, I'd have been in a stronger position! Also they sit on the edge of the quad and drive, so it's not a driving sensation. P.s. Health and safety LOL. Equally, we had no great interest in the camel rides, having done that in Merzouga but again the price plummeted to 5 Dinar (we weren't negotiating, we just weren't interested!) for a quick ride and photos was acceptable. We weren't looking for a Lawrence of Arabia trip into the dunes, but they tried to make that an 'extra' whilst we were in the camel - and I mean they were heading to the desert and saying in their broken English that this would be extra! Well we hadn't defined exactly what we were going to get for 5 dinar, so it was a walk around the edge of the town for a...
Read moreThis is the original set of Mos Eisley Spaceport. The structures are still there. Some of the structures including the moisture vaporators have been renovated twice due to the prequels and just time in the desert. I love this place and has been a dream to go here.
You can get to it by driving off road if you rent a car, hiring a 4x4 guide for half a day or by Tour group. I was hooked up with a 4x4 driver with another couple and shared the costs, 4 passengers. It was completely offroad to get there and very fun ride through and over some of the dunes. Also making a stop at the Camels Back or to Star Wars fans, The Sith Infiltrator Site, by the salt lake. Then into this place.
It was off season in March, not much tourists and only two 4x4s of tourists came during sunset. There were 2-3 vendors set up and a camel. It was so nice having the whole place to explore and take photos. It was very windy so lots of sand in my face and eyes but well worth it.
I went with my costume and lightsaber and took the photos and videos, fulfilling my childhood dreams.
A few words of advice for Star Wars fans. This is not where the Owens' farm is located. You can catch the sunset here and it looks amazing as hell but I left right before that to go to the salt lake where the actual igloo is. It's about 30 minutes at a separate location. I arranged with the driver to go there specifically and caught the Tatooine sunset...
Read moreAmazing. !!! Absolute must. I was so excited. Travel by 4 x 4 over the desert, passing a mirage or two, ascending/descending vertiginous dunes, to arrive at (with John Williams music "Star Wars opening bars" )to view MOS EISLEY!!!!. Deserted after the first usage then re used and only due to fans of the "Universe far Far away" removing some sand and the second trilogy location rebuild ,and then the Government realising that this would be/maybe a tourist attraction Add-on to a small group Tunisia tour that (seriously) for me was a compelling reason to pay the extra. I am admitting folks. I am over 70 ,children 49 ,48 (First iteration of Star Wars ) and 30 ( 2nd Gen) I am a died in the wool fan of the cinematography, storyline, fairy tale, reality, good v bad (and those in between) The hustlers selling camel rides and cold drinks made this feel even more authentic (ignore them, they go away) I think that someone, some where , in a galaxy quite near Tunisia , realised that adults would want to visit the set of an imaginary space port , in the middle of a vast sand desert ,on an...
