An unforgettable boat trip through the Green Canyon We had the amazing opportunity to explore the Green Canyon by boat, cruising through turquoise-green waters all the way to where the Manavgat River flows into the canyon. At the point where the river meets the canyon, there’s a small seasonal waterfall – in June, it was just a gentle stream, but our guide told us that a month earlier it was a powerful cascade. By July, however, it usually dries out completely. That’s why I’d recommend visiting in May or June, when the waterfall still flows and the landscape is lush.
As we sailed through the canyon, breathtaking mountain scenery opened up on both sides. Steep cliffs covered in rich greenery surround the lake – in one spot, we even saw a little wooden hut or pavilion near the water, nestled at the foot of the mountain. I tried to capture it all in photos, but honestly, no picture does it justice. You have to see it with your own eyes.
The water has a unique greenish color, caused by phytoplankton, algae, and minerals from the surrounding rocks – it gives the canyon its magical look. Even on a hot day, the breeze while cruising is refreshing, especially with the sound of the boat cutting through the calm water.
On the way to the canyon, we passed a massive Oymapinar Dam, an impressive sight in itself. The dam is about 185 meters high, and the structure is around 30 meters thick at the base and 5 meters thick at the top. There’s a small spillway that releases excess water once a day. The road leading up to the dam is quite narrow and doesn’t have guardrails close to the edge, so if you're afraid of heights, it’s best not to sit on the outer side of the vehicle! But the view? Absolutely breathtaking.

Going on a boat trip, you can see the beautiful mountains, forests, and wildlife around you. To swim, the water is murky (not because it’s dirty, but because of the green colour) and very cold to swim in. Because it’s a reservoir, it’s a bit more difficult to float than sea water (as it’s freshwater) so keep this in mind if you’re planning on swimming!
It was quite windy but in the sun and 40C weather this was good for us. Of course as it’s in the middle of nowhere, there isn’t anything here but the parking, pier, and a souvenir shop.
There’s not much to do here other than take a boat trip, but either way it is a lovely place to visit if you’re around the area. At times it was a little boring, but that was quickly resolved by observing the...
