The so-called Monk’s Valley (Paşabağ) is part of a protected area with an entrance fee. Here you can see a number of impressive fairy chimneys – not all of them are accessible, some are fenced off to protect them. The formations are very different from those in Love Valley: many have hard basalt caps, which make them look like little houses or mushrooms.

Even though guided tours are offered, you don’t really need one – the area can easily be explored on your own. Some fairy chimneys and caves are closed to visitors, which makes sense, as unfortunately many of the open sites in Cappadocia show signs of graffiti or damage. Protecting these natural wonders ensures they will remain for future generations.

Because Paşabağ is close to Göreme, it gets very busy – lots of buses and tour groups arrive here. The romantic, quiet atmosphere you might find in Love Valley or Rose Valley is missing. Still, the site is truly spectacular and feels almost otherworldly – somewhere between a fairy tale and a science fiction movie.

For photography lovers it’s a fantastic place, with unique perspectives and shapes. I would definitely recommend it as part of any Cappadocia visit, especially if you are fascinated by the different forms of...

Subject: Racial Discrimination and Terrible Service at Anadolu Kültürel Girişim (Paşabağ, Çavuşin)

At the official souvenir shop Anadolu Kültürel Girişim in Paşabağ (Çavuşin, Nevşehir), I experienced one of the most appalling and humiliating services during my travels — so severe that I decided to end my trip and return home.

I ordered a coffee when there were no other customers waiting, but after more than 30 minutes, nothing had been prepared. When I asked politely, I was simply told to "get in line" — despite there being no queue.

On my third inquiry, after showing my receipt, the staff exchanged mocking glances and only then began preparing a drink — but it was not what I ordered. No sincere apology was offered. The coffee was handed over without a lid, causing it to spill on the counter, and I didn’t receive the full amount.

This wasn’t just bad service. It was an experience rooted in a lack of respect, equality, and dignity. The way I was treated strongly felt like racial or cultural discrimination.

While this shop is promoted as an official cultural business, what I experienced was in direct contradiction to the values of Turkish hospitality. I hope those responsible will be held accountable and that future visitors will not be subjected to such treatment.

(Monks...

Welcome to Pasabagi, aka Monk’s Valley, home of the fairy chimneys, which look suspiciously like mushrooms or stone-carved penises, depending on your level of maturity (or honesty). Once upon a time, monks lived in these geological oddities, holing up in minimalist cave studios with no plumbing, but killer views. Think ancient monastic Airbnb, rustic charm meets spiritual solitude, minus the Wi-Fi. The place is weirdly majestic, slightly obscene, and totally worth it. Come for the natural beauty, stay for the geological innuendos and monk-sized man caves.

If Cappadocia’s fairy chimneys had a spiritual retreat, Paşabağ would be their sanctuary. Known as Monks Valley, this open-air museum is a surreal blend of geology and quiet reverence. The towering mushroom-shaped formations feel like nature’s own minarets—each one sculpted by wind, time, and volcanic whimsy. Wander through hermit cells carved into stone, pause beneath the shade of ancient tuff, and let the silence speak. Entry is around €12, and it’s worth every cent for the chance to walk among formations that look like they were plucked from a dream.
