Genuinely one of the most impressive sites I've ever visited. Make sure to go in the morning or evening so you can see the sunset/sunrise. We went in the morning (5 AM!) as part of a tour organized by the hotel. It was pricey but I was concerned about the mountain roads in my rental car. I probably didn't need to worry: the roads were actually very good and paved all the way to the top. There's a big cafe up there where they serve food and you can buy tickets. Obviously a lot of money went into this major tourist site!

Getting to the site itself was rough. The parking lot is at the bottom of the summit and it's a 1/2-3/4 of a mile climb straight up. It was a cloudy day and the sun was just peaking out. On the climb up I felt like I was on some sort of medieval pilgrimage, rushing to the shrine atop the mountain. I had seen pictures of the place before plus a scale model at Adiyaman the day before, but this is one of those times where pictures really can't do the experience justice. The sense of achievement from reaching the top combined with the fierce wind and the wonder of the light hitting the statues really makes the experience unique. Definitely aim for the morning (that side is the most impressive) and make sure the day is sunny.

The site is basically one big tomb housing King Antiochus of Commagene. Mount Nemrut is the largest mountain around and you can see the summit and tumulus atop for miles around. Around the tumulus, facing the rising and setting sun, are a series of statues representing the late king and various gods. Impressive by any standards, but the location is what really makes the site something not...

For travelers in Türkiye, Nemrut Dağ stands as a truly unforgettable experience, offering a blend of ancient history and breathtaking natural beauty. While it's a bit of a journey, especially if you're traveling from Istanbul, it's an absolute must-see if you have an extra three or four days, or if you're already exploring the Cappadocia region around Göreme. The sunset view from the summit is an experience that words can't fully capture. As the sun dips below the horizon, it bathes the colossal stone heads and statues of King Antiochus I of Commagene in a warm, golden light. The atmosphere is serene and magical, with the ancient sculptures standing as silent witnesses to the spectacular display of colors in the sky. It's a moment that will stay with you long after you've left the mountain. Getting to Nemrut Dağ is surprisingly easy, with good travel options from nearby cities. We found it very convenient to travel from either Şanlıurfa or Adıyaman. You have the flexibility of driving yourself, which allows you to explore the surrounding area at your own pace, or you can opt for one of the many bus tours that make the trip straightforward and stress-free. For those who want to fully embrace the experience, there are also options for a one-night stay in the mountain, just a 10-minute drive away, allowing you to catch both the sunset and sunrise. Overall, Nemrut Dağ is more than just an archaeological site; it's a profound, almost spiritual journey. It requires some effort to get there, but the magnificent stone heads and the stunning sunset make it more than...

Super unique and inspiring place to visit. The statue heads and ruins do not disappoint and are even more impressive than in the pictures due to their location on top of the mountain. Getting to the Mount is a very nice drive through valleys and hills and the climb up to the statues is an easy, but long, trek. There is a very good pathway that takes you up and avoids being too steep or having too many steps, so it very well designed. To get to the mount from the city, I took a last minute tour that was found for me by a travel agent in the city. It was in Turkish so I did not understand what the tour guide was saying most of the time but he was incredibly kind and would speak to me in English as we were walking and fill me in. He told me that he had not spoken English in years and that before he used to do tours all the time in English but due to the political situation in Turkey, the international tourists had stopped coming so he can only do tours in Turkish now. Learning the history of the region and about the mixing of cultures was very interesting as I was not taught much about this time outside of Ancient Greece proper and Rome. I flew here on a very cheap domestic ticket from Istanbul by way of Ankara (which I also visited) so it worth a visit if you have an extra few days in Turkey as it is a quick and cheap flight.
