This mosque is built within the old fortress walls of Gokdepe where, in 1881, Russian troops defeated the Turkmens and thus ushered in the Russian occupation of Turkmenistan. Turkmenistan was incorporated into the Soviet Union in 1924 and communism spread and slowly diluted the rich Turkmen culture. It wasn’t until 1991 when the Soviet Union collapsed that Turkmenistan regained it independence and joined the UN in 1994.

Очень красивая мечеть! Проект разработал ашхабадский архитектор Какаджан Дурдыев. Мечеть была открыта в 1995 году, и названа в

честь Президента Туркменистана Сапармурата Ниязова. Мечеть была построена французской компанией Bouygues за один год.

В 2008 году мечеть реконструировала турецкая фирма «SUR Turizm Insaat Tijaret ve sanayi LTD STI».
