Well worth the visit.

We drove to the top of the falls, where we had a guide take us to the different viewpoints. The walk was easy going - a few steep ups & downs, but it wasn't too long. Our guide was good, and had some interesting information about the area & the falls. The viewpoints give you some great views looking back over the falls, and then you can walk to the top of the falls themselves. Here you really get to experience them - the sound of crashing water, the huge waves, and the power of all this water flowing down a narrow passage. It's a good spot to sit for a while & take it all in.

Due to our itinerary, we drove to the Parra Ferry Corssing the following day where the Murchison Falls boat trips start. We were on one of the larger boats (there were many different shapes and sizes). It was slow-going upstream, but this gave you time to take in the views - plenty of elephants, hippos, crocs, kingfishers, and bee-eaters along the way. They had a bar on the boat with various drinks for sale.

The boat cruise takes you to the bottom of the falls, although you do not get close to them. From this point, you can do a walk up to the top of the falls, and either drive back from the parking lot (if you'd arranged that with your driver), or catch a later boat cruise back to the Parra Ferry Crossing. BE SURE YOU GET ONTO THE CORRECT BOAT when heading back to Parra - a family climbed onto our boat after their walk, not realizing it was owned by a different company, so they were charged a second time for the trip. The boat trip back is quicker, as you're now traveling downstream.

Overall, the boat trip was worth it, and had some great sights, but if you're limited for time, you want to head straight to the top...

One of the Large Uganda’s National Parks situated in northwestern Uganda, the large Murchison Falls National Park covers an area of 3893 square kilometers and lies within the northern part of the Albertine Rift Valley. The White Nile, from its Lake Victoria source at Jinja, flows into the shallow Lake Kyoga and into Murchison Falls National Park, cutting the Park into north and south. From Murchison, the river flows into Lake Albert and turns northerly out of Uganda into Southern Sudan.

The Nile is synonymous with the stunning Murchison Falls Park - biggest of all Uganda parks; in the Park, the river pours its millions of litres through a breathtaking 7 meters gap in the rocks, at Murchison Falls, @ 300 cubic meters per second - dropping 43 metres into the gorge below. A Nile Boat cruise is offered to the bottom of the falls, with en-route sights of hippos, buffaloes, crocodiles and various bird species; on arrival, one gets to enjoy a rewarding nature walk to the top of the falls.

The park is made up of woodland, wetland, savannah and tropical forest; it is a habitant for over 76 mammal species, including elephant, Rothschild’s giraffe, warthog, Cape buffalo, Uganda kob and hartebeest; in the river, you get hippos and the largest concentration of Nile crocodiles in the world. A birder’s paradise, the Park has over 450 bird species unique to each of the habitats; its’ Nile corridor has a big collection of water birds, including the rare pre-historic looking shoebill stork. Activities including game drives, boat rides and spot fishing; the sizes of the Nile perch in this...

This is a very beautiful place. I took a boat ride on the Nile to see the fall from below and then drove up to experience the other view. The boat ride was very long and tiring in the heat. We spotted a few elephants and crocs during the 3hr boat journey. But that wasn’t a very great experience. The other experience when I went to the top of the fall, was totally exhilarating. The immense pressure of water created a mist which went upwards to the top of the hill and right up to where I stood. It was like an upward rain of sorts. Next morning, I took the jungle safari where I spotted antelopes, lioness, lion cubs, giraffes, water buffaloes. It was another great experience. The entire safari area has great roads and is fairly well organised. However, one must always carry the ticket as it is checked at almost all points within the safari. There is an additional charge to visit the top of the fall. This has to be paid to the security point Enroute.

We had a great time, and it was amazing seeing the falls up close! An amazing force of mother nature. Davis, our park ranger guide, was also great at explaining the history behind the park and the falls. Such great customer service from the gate entry through to the park and then the falls themselves! You pay a gate entry fee and then a fee to get to the falls (card payments are accepted). You must bring your ID / passport with you for the gate entry and then use the tickets from the gate through the park before getting access to the falls and to the falls. It was such a great experience, and I would definitely recommend whislt in Uganda! We managed it as a day trip from the capital. Just start your journey early. 😎
