With incredible adventures in mind, I met the dawn of the 25th day of December 2020 on the road. An icy backroad led me north to the area known for historical attractions. The studded tires of my off-road rig dug fearlessly into the slippery surface. The temperature was slightly above the freezing point making patches of black ice mixed with snow drifts even more dangerous.

After an one hour drive I ended up in a city founded in 1660. This city is located in Eastern Ukraine and is a contemporary of Jersey City, New Jersey, USA, founded in 1660, New York City, settled in 1624, and, the city of Charleston, South Carolina, founded in 1670.

Hoary fortress

The historical city center met me dressed in a fluffy snow coat. After a few-minute driving, a yellow painted fortress, a silent ancient guardian, appeared around the corner. The fortress thick old walls circled four massive towers. Small birds were joyfully chirping in the tower's empty loopholes. Wind gusts blew snowflakes making this place even more old looking.

A view of this stronghold for a second reminded me of a round wall of the Globe Theatre in London. My first impression was correct. These fortress towers were in fact quarters for circus artists and serf ballet dancers centuries ago. The open air stage witnessed works of French and Italian authors and musicians back in 1700s, such as Pierre Monsigny, Andre Gretry, Niccolo Piccinni, Giovanni Paisiello, Mozart, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, and Denis Diderot.

Angels and chimeras of mansion

A stone's throw away I found a mansion of the theater owners. The villa was built in 1762 in the neoclassical style with elements of Baroque, decorated with sandrikas and pilasters, bas-reliefs in the form of angels and chimeras. The building had a few owners over the course of history. A biography of one of the mansion owners was a story on how to become rich and famous working both hard and smart. His name – Leopold Koenig.

Sugar King

The fifteen-year-old baker’s son began to earn his daily bread by hard physical work as a sugar-refiner apprentice. When Leopold Koenig was twenty he became a technical leader of an important large refiner. At the age of 27 years with help of the husband of his mother’s sister, a rich tailor, he secured money to buy the smallest of the mid-sized sugar refineries. Within two years he had paid off all of his debts. At 34 he traveled to Germany to work on a refinery as a blue-collar worker in order to master new cutting-edge technologies. At the end of his life he was one of the greatest industrialists at that time and owned lots of commercial and residential properties.

Fine arts museum

Nowadays this mansion houses a fine arts museum and hosts chamber concerts of classical music.

After visiting the museum, I had a hearty lunch and continued traveling to my next adventure. Ukraine has many attractions to be thrilled about. Inspired by Koenig’s story my mind became occupied with a thought on how to improve the distillation process to produce...

Great place to spend a day in a beauty of spring, autumn or summer. History here connected with pleasure from nature. Actually, it is the first time I have seen pecan tree in Ukraine. Here they call it Grey American nut.
