Zhovkva Castle — Attraction in Zhovkva Urban Hromada

The Zhovkva Castle occupies the principal square of the town of Zhovkva in Ukraine. It was founded by Polish Hetman Stanisław Żółkiewski as his fortified residence. Construction began in 1594 and was mostly completed in 1606.

The castle had a typically Serlian entrance arch and was encircled by moats (up to 17 meters in width). One wing of the building accommodated the arsenal and stables; another was immediately contiguous to the city wall. In 1606, a garden was laid out next to the hetman's residence. It contained a menagerie with wisents, deers, and chamois. The palatine chapel was consecrated in 1640.

The golden age of the Zolkiew Castle was the late 17th century when it passed through inheritance to Jakub Sobieski and then to his son John III, a native of Zhovkva. It was there that the king celebrated his victory under the walls of Vienna. In the 18th century the castle's facade was decorated with the statues of its owners from the Zolkiewski, Daniłowicz, Sobieski, and Radziwill families.

After the partition of Poland the castle fell into disuse and was auctioned off. During the 19th century the chapel and some other structures were dismantled or rebuilt to accommodate a local school. Приехали посмотреть Жолкву со Львова. Городок милый. ⚠️Но замок очень разочаровал, в первую очередь работниками.⚠️ Зашли, спросили цену на вход, нам сказали, 10 грн. вход во двор, а 60 грн. в музей (в таком случае проход во двор уже входил в стоимость). Думали взять только во двор и заплатили 20 грн. Передумав, решили что посетим все же музей. Попросили билеты в музей (чтоб попасть и в музей как раз и во двор) Но т.к. до того уже было оплачено за вход во двор (а билеты на руки мы не брали) то заплатили 100 грн(за двоих), чтоб предыдущие 20 уже приплюсовали. Тут женщины нам хамски говорят, платите еще 20 грн ! Мы не поняли, мол как так, на двоих 120 же получается. А они говорят, не наше дело. Мы уже достали вам билеты за 10 и поэтому те 20, что вы отдали минуту назад - не в счет. "БИЛЕТЫ" кстати, НЕ С КАССЫ, А БУМАЖКИ СОВЕТСКОГО СОЮЗА, которые отрезаются ножницами. Было бы не жалко те дополнительные 20грн.заплатить, если бы не такое хамское отношение. У ВАС ТАМ ДАЖЕ КАССЫ НЕТ ! Никто не просил вас заранее отрезать билеты,а потом требовать за них повторную оплату, это раз. Во-вторых, сказали бы адекватно, мы бы без проблем заплатили. В-третьих, с такими "работничками" как вы, не то что в музей приезжать, но и смотреть в его сторону и рекомендовать никому не хочется !!! В итоге отказались от входа в музей, хотите нагреть на 20 грн - останетесь и без 120 ! В след нам выкрикивали слова типа "бессовестные и т.д" Каковыми сами и являются. Это ужас, какое мерзкое, некультурное, хабальское отношение ! Стыдно должно быть, нет чтоб развивать туризм и притягивать людей, делаете все, чтобы не возвращались. ⚠️ Кстати, 20 грн тоже были потрачены зря - во дворе "замка" смотреть не на что ! Смотрите фасад - это самое нормальное что там...

The castle is reminiscent of so much history of Western Ukraine, much of it forgotten and even more erased during the soviet days and WWII. While the exterior of it may some day be restored, the interior is long gone and will never represent the original castle. The castle served as a middle school at one time, and an apartment complex.
