Al Jahili Fort is a cultural gem in the heart of Al Ain, offering visitors an immersive experience in Emirati history and architecture. Built in the late 19th century by Sheikh Zayed the First, the fort is a stunning example of traditional mudbrick architecture. The structure is characterized by its high defensive walls, circular watchtowers, and intricate ventilation systems designed to combat the harsh desert climate—a true testament to the ingenuity of its builders. The fort's interiors are equally captivating, hosting a variety of exhibitions that delve into the history and culture of the region. A highlight is the art exhibition, which showcases contemporary and traditional works that blend Emirati heritage with modern creativity. The presentation is thoughtfully curated, with pieces that engage visitors of all ages. One particularly interesting aspect of the fort’s design is its strategic layout, which combines functionality with aesthetics. The thick mudbrick walls keep the interiors cool, while the carefully positioned watchtowers offer panoramic views of the surrounding desert—a perfect example of architecture harmonizing with the environment. Whether you're an art enthusiast or a history buff, Al Jahili Fort provides a unique experience that educates and inspires. The combination of its architectural brilliance and engaging exhibitions makes it a must-visit destination

Since opening its gates in 2008, Al Jahili Fort – set about an hour and a half away from Abu Dhabi in the lush garden city of Al Ain – has been a focal point of activities associated with the philosophy, culture and heritage of Abu Dhabi. Al Jahili is one of the largest forts in the UAE, built in the 1890s on the orders of Sheikh Zayed bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, also known as Zayed the First, as the home to members of the ruling Al Nahyan family. Built of sun-dried mud brick, early restoration work was done on the fort in 1985, followed by a major rehabilitation project by the Department of Culture and Tourism - Abu Dhabi between 2007 and 2008. Surrounded by a lush park, the enchanting fort has received the prestigious Terra Award for Internal Design and Layout in 2016. Transformed into a cultural centre and tourist attraction, it now houses a temporary exhibition gallery as well as a permanent exhibition devoted to Sir Wilfred Thesiger. He was an intrepid explorer, travel writer and photographer who, with his Emirati and Omani companions, crossed the world's largest sand mass, the Empty Quarter (Rub' al Khali), twice in the 1940s. Nearby must-visit attractions include the historical Jahili Mosque, built around the same time as the fort.

Al Jahili Fort is one of the largest castles in Al Ain and best-in-class example of local military architecture. Historically, Al Jahili Fort is of great importance as it is well associated with the history of the Al Nahyan Family. Inside a permanent exhibition is devoted to Wilfred Thesiger, the English explorer and traveller, who had been accommodated in Al Ain by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan several times during the 1940s. The original part of Al Jahili Fort consists of two buildings, a square courtyard of approximately 1,300 sq metres with 6.5 metres tall walls, and a separate round tower, 50 metres south-west away from the castle, composed of four concentric tiers. The design of the separate tower is significant since it resembles the construction of one of the towers from the Bronze Age unearthed in the Hili area. Three corners of the courtyard are occupied by small towers, each measuring 12.5 metres in height, and in the northeastern corner is the two-storey building which was used for receptions and guests of the Sheikh. The main entrance to the courtyard in the southern wall is surmounted by a poem dedicated to the fort’s builder, Sheikh Zayed the First. Entrance: Free
