Come winter and its time to go out in the open for outdoor activities. The fossil dunes in Abu dhabi are naturally formed abstract structures created by nature by wind-swept sand that when permeated with calcium carbonate start to harden and form distinct, varied and unique structures. Shape of each Fossil Dune changes over time and no two formations are ever the same. These structures stand in the middle of nowhere offroad on the way from Abu dhabi city to Al Wathba. There are no sign boards on the road but google map will help you to reach the place. While driving towards Al Wathba, you will see a green patch of long hillock with thick tall trees where you need to take a right turn and follow the road for a few kilometres. Then you need to go offroad to your left and enter the sand area and drive a few kilomteres when you will see these small structures. There is absolutely nothing in the vicinity. These fossil structures are fragile and may break even with the slightest pressure and the damage is irreversible. The place is simply open land without any protection. When I visited the place, I was amazed to see nature's creations but at the same time disheartened to see people climbing all over the fossil dunes to take pictures. I would earnestly request all who visit, to enjoy nature's creation without causing any permanent damage to the structures and preserve the heritage. You can also carry a small table and chairs and enjoy light snacks and tea with the fossil dunes in the backdrop. I would also request to those who visit to keep the place clean and not to litter. Also ensure that you dont drive all over the place but park your car in one place and take a walk around the area since there are lot new formations sprouting up all over. Let them grow to a substantial size to make the area full of magnificient formation structures. Help to preserve the national heritage.

During recent visit to explore the renowned Fossil Dunes, only to discover that the location was temporarily closed to the public. However, this setback did not deter me from experiencing the geological wonders that this area has to offer. As I journeyed along the route, I couldn't help but notice the intriguing small fossil dunes that dotted the landscape. Once known as fossil rocks, these natural formations hold significant geological importance and add to the allure of the region. While the main site may have been inaccessible, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the area has been converted into a protected zone with excellent amenities. This transformation ensures the preservation of these unique geological features for future generations to appreciate and study. One of the highlights of my visit was learning about the Al Wathba Fossil, a hidden gem of Abu Dhabi. Located in the Al Wathba desert, these fossil dunes are a testament to the region's rich geological history. The intricate patterns and formations found here are a sight to behold and offer invaluable insights into the Earth's past. Although I was unable to explore the Fossil Dunes up close, the glimpse I caught along the route left me in awe of the natural beauty and geological significance of the area. I highly recommend adding a visit to the Al Wathba Fossil Dunes to your itinerary when visiting Abu Dhabi. Despite its temporary closure, the allure of the Fossil Dunes and the promise of future exploration make it a destination worth keeping on your radar. With its protected status and fascinating geological features, the Al Wathba Fossil Dunes are a must-see for anyone interested in the wonders of nature and the Earth's history.
