Ghost Story!

Nestled in the heart of the Bodmin Moors, the Jamaica Inn is steeped in history and atmospheric charm. The inn's location amidst the moors adds to its eerie allure, making it a must-visit for those intrigued by the mysterious and supernatural. The building itself is truly impressive, with its ancient stone walls and rich history that seem to whisper tales of the past.

We chose the Jamaica Inn not only for its captivating ambiance but also because of its consistently great food. The menu caters to a variety of tastes, including some excellent vegan options, making it an ideal spot for everyone. Despite the inn's large size, which almost always guarantees a table, it's wise to check availability ahead of time, especially during peak hours.

For families, the updated kids' playground is a highlight. Our children loved it, providing a perfect spot for them to play while we enjoyed a leisurely meal. The inn's blend of history, atmosphere, and family-friendly amenities makes it a unique destination.

On a more unusual note, our visit was marked by an eerie experience. My mum had a strange encounter in the ladies' restroom on August 20th. While washing her hands, she noticed a young girl, around 8 or 9 years old, with strawberry blonde hair, who entered a cubicle and began singing to herself. Moments later, my mum felt a distinct tap or pull on her shoulder. Startled, she turned around, expecting to see my daughter, but no one was there. The sensation was so strong that it gave her goosebumps and left her feeling unwell.

What made this encounter even more unsettling is that my mum, usually a skeptic when it comes to the paranormal, couldn’t rationalize what had happened. She initially thought something had fallen on her or her bag had slipped, but she wasn’t even carrying her bag at the time. The young girl continued singing in the cubicle, and no one else entered the restroom. It’s an experience she’s still trying to make sense of.

In summary, the Jamaica Inn is not just a place to eat or stay; it’s an experience. Whether you're drawn to its historical significance, delicious food, or the potential for a ghostly encounter, it’s a destination that leaves a...

We stayed last night in room 4. We got an upgrade as my other half thought it a good idea to ask for another room in the haunted areas of the hotel. On arrival our room had a four poster bed , fairly small but very nice given it was part of the 1700's section of the building. We had done some research before arriving and saw that some rooms in the new and many rooms in the original areas have had activity from the paranormal. We had booked a spring break package with dinner and breakfast included so thought we would go ahead. Within a few minutes I was in the bathroom getting ready for a shower and heard a very loud male whistle from inside the room (corner nearest the bedroom). When asking my partner if she had whistled and a response of absolutely NO I suddenly felt on edge. We had dinner in the restaurant that evening which we cannot fault, staff on bar and restaurant were amazing. Forgot to mention before dinner we set a cross with the balls on the bedroom board game that was on the window cill.||During the night we felt uneasy, room was very warm and bed comfortable, at 3am I awoke to the loud sound of two bangs outside the bedroom door, the motion lamp on the sideboard in the hall went on and lit up part of the door, no sounds of anyone in the hall walking around were heard.|During the night I smelt a very very strong aroma of sweat and unwashed clothing with a definite feeling of being watched but didn't see anything.|In the morning we awoke after a mixed bag of sleep quality. Opened the curtains and gasped when we saw one of the balls on the board game had moved from the board to the window cill next to the game. 100% genuinely freaked.||Breakfast amazing and staff were perfect. Can't recommend this place enough, we will be back 👍 ||Please be aware that despite mixed reactions on this place (probably people expecting something spooky and then down grading reviews if they don't have one) the haunted rooms and various areas including museum certainly have a vibe, definitely not a travelodge...

We have been to Jamaica Inn many times and recommend it to visitors and guest over the years. Today we went and were met with a surly faced chap behind the bar who directed us to where we had to go to get our table no. We sat and one of the servers advised us of the specials.|The men went to the bar again to order the food and drinks, the conversation began by asking for the pie - reply "we don't have any pie" so we asked for jacket potato "we dont have any jackets " came the reply. My husband asked for a lime and soda - you guessed it "we haven't got any lime" - My husband returned to the table to ask for an alternative and a waitress overheard him tell us. She came out of the kitchen and advised that both pie and jackets were available and went to tell the barman. While my husband was with us, our friend ordered their food, the chap behind the bar said "are you with him?" friend confirmed this "what do you want" - Friend gave his order. When my husband returned to the bar he spoke with our friend and explained that there was pie and jackets - while this exchange was going on the bar man said "Hello??" twice as if he was waiting for a response. There was no one currently waiting at the bar. We did complain about his attitude and the server did apologise and say she would bring it to the attention of the manager. When the men returned to the bar the service could not have been more different and much more in keeping with previous experiences - the sarky barman had left the area. There was other things said by this chap but I think you get the gist. The service with the exception of him (who desperately needs a customer service refresher) was very good, they were attentive and chatty and we cannot fault them nor can we fault the food. Appreciate this was a one off but please keep him back of house - he really isn't geared up for front of house. We'll not let this put us off but did knock a star off...

Another visit here but unfortunately our last!! Not impressed by the poor customer service received upon our reservation for breakfast today by a specific older lady. We had friends that had stayed the night who we were intending on meeting for breakfast. Upon our arrival, I requested that would it be possible to have a large table or a table near by to accommodate an extra three guests. It felt like I'd asked for the impossible! The lady seemed over the moon in saying it wasn't possible in any way! Then subsequently showed us to our reserved table which had a wooden reserved sign. The table for two next to us didn't have this. I incorrectly thought that, due to the table not having a reserved sign that we would be able to be able to sit together after our three hour journey - but oh no! This wasn't going to happen. The same lady approached our table saying that she thinks it might be reserved and our guests that had just arrived would need to sit elsewhere. I suddenly didn't feel hungry anymore! While I understand that this is a busy time for you I feel that being helpful and considerate would be of paramount importance when satisfying your customers and guests. Maybe, unfriendly staff that don't care about customers desires and needs should consider other occupations that suit them better and more importantly give customers a welcoming feeling. Never again. Just my new opinion. June 2025. We had a great stay. The food was genuinely good. The breakfast was of great quality and offered in generous portions. The staff were all very polite, from the reception to the bar staff and down to the cleaners, all of whom were helpful. I had some reservations after reading past reviews, which now appear to be unfounded. It seems there might be new management that is quite capable. Oh, and I almost forgot to add that there were no signs of ghosts, at least not in our room, room 32 :-))

Ahoy, fellow travellers! Stopped off at the notorious Jamaica Inn on our way back from a Cornwall family holiday. This marks the third time I’ve swung by this inn, only to find the gift shop as closed as Davy Jones’ locker. I must say, it seems to be losing its charm over the years. The place lures you in with its link to the novel and its swashbuckling history, but absolutely zero effort is being made to keep this nostalgic experience afloat. The smuggler mannequins are ancient relics themselves and in dire need of repair. One of the only interactive ones is touting an experience that was keelhauled seven years ago, and the poor chap’s hand has fallen off into his chair. Alas, the staff were as clueless as landlubbers on how to reprogram him. The overall atmosphere is still good, with a vintage feel. Especially sitting by the doors on a dark and stormy night, every time the door hinges open, you half expect a real pirate to swagger in, demanding rum and treasure. The food was decent, though service was slower than a ship in the doldrums. We ordered burgers, pie, and a children’s fish. All went down well, though we had to ask for several things that should be standard fare: table sauces, napkins, and the children’s meal dessert (twice). Perhaps they were busy, but it felt more like lacklustre service. It won’t be my last voyage to the Jamaica Inn, but I really hope the experience improves with age. Arr, let’s hope they don’t completely scuttle the charm next time. And maybe, just maybe, I’ll catch the elusive gift shop open!
