The present home of the English Benedictine Congregation community dedicated to St Lawrence of Rome. Originally founded during the period of penal laws at Dieulord (spelling) low countries. The Community had to leave during the French Terror or Revolution. And after a period of false or interrupted settlements in England settled on the ridge of the dales over looking a beautiful valley. A valley now home to monks and wildlife including badgers, deer and a variety of birds. Home also to the separate Ampleforth College a coeducational facility. The monks under their current Abbot, Robert Igo welcome visitors of all and no faith and has a welcome and monastic experience center which includes a shop and a history of the community. The monastery has excellent guest facilities and welcomes visitors to join them in the Choir for Mass and the daily offices (Matins, Lauds, Sext, Vespers and Compline). Read moreWe thoroughly enjoyed our time at the Abbey as our trip was arranged around a mini pilgramage. Coming from Australia, the Abbey provided perfect time to relect, time out, spiritual development and enter somewhat into the life of the Benedictine Rule.It has given us a new perspective on their life. Incredibly welcoming and inspiring. Certainly,we are sure our own lives will take on a different outlook on returning home. We hope to return ,maybe next year.as we travel every year,to appreciate even more fully the ambience of Ampleforth. We met some lovely people, each with their own life experience which enriched our own life. What a blessing. May you continue you extraordinary work to those from all over the world and realize that even in Australia you will be prayed for.Teresa...
Read moreI recently stayed at Ampleforth Roman Catholic Abbey and it was a most enjoyable experience. I attended the midday prayer service with the Benedictine Monks at Ampleforth Abbey and also a Mass in the afternoon. I spoke to a few of the Benedictine Monks at Ampleforth Abbey and it was interesting to learn more about the Benedictine Monks community at Ampleforth. I also walked around the grounds of Ampleforth and walked to the Orchard at Ampleforth. Each evening I ate and had drinks at the White Swan in Ampleforth. Ampleforth Roman Catholic Abbey is a spiritual experience which I would recommend. I would recommend a visit to Ampleforth Roman...
