Hidden gem. Remains of Roman fort and later castle (and resident sheep). World-renowned 7th century Bewcastle Cross. Do go into the rather unpromising looking visitor's centre in the churchyard (free) - really good exhibition detailing the history of the area. Inside the pretty little church, you'll find local guides (and stylish souvenirs to help pay for repairs). No explanatory boards like in the Hadrians Wall hotshots, but if you go in the visitor's centre first the site us easy to understand. And the scenery and drive there is magnificent. Easy parking...
   Read moreSo I've passed the St Cuthbert's Church, the Cross, and Castle many times whilst at work. Finally, I've managed to do the tourist bit and explore the fascinating history here. I was not aware of any facilities available at this location. Such a beautiful and very remote location, not for visiting in poor weather, that's for sure. It's a short walk from the Church around the neighbouring farm to a public footpath for access to the castle.
