The tree is named after this German fairy tale movie. The story concerns a beautiful but selfish and haughty princess who rejects the proposal of a wealthy prince.[3] She scorns the gifts he offers her, and says that she will marry him only if he brings her the mythical "singing ringing tree". The prince locates the tree in the territory of an evil dwarf, who offers to give him the enchanted tree, on the understanding that, if the princess still rejects him, he will be in the dwarf's power and will be turned into a bear. Because the tree will only sing and ring when the princess falls in love with the prince, she is disappointed in it and continues to reject the prince. The prince is forced to return to the dwarf's lair and is turned into a bear.

The princess sends her father to find the singing ringing tree for her, but he is met by the prince, in the guise of a bear, who gives him the tree on condition that the king returns with the first thing the king sees on his return. This turns out to be the princess, who is now delivered into the hands of the dwarf. The dwarf, seeing the princess's self-centred behaviour, casts a spell to make her ugly. The bear tells her that she will regain her beauty only if she changes her ways. Gradually she is won over by the bear and becomes beautiful again. Despite the dwarf's attempts to keep her and the prince apart, she eventually falls in love with him and the singing ringing tree finally lives up...

The "Singing Ringing Tree," located in Burley, is an innovative musical sculpture , the structure is made from galvanized steel pipes arranged in a tree-like form, and it stands atop a hill, providing breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. What makes this installation unique is its ability to produce sound. As the wind passes through the pipes, it creates an ethereal melody that resonates across the area. The sculpture's design is not only visually striking but also acoustically ingenious, allowing it to transform nature's breath into music.Visitors to the Singing Ringing Tree can experience this enchanting soundscape, which varies with the wind's strength and direction, making each visit a unique auditory experience. The site has become a popular attraction for both tourists and locals, inviting them to engage with art, architecture, and nature in a harmonious way.In essence, the Singing Ringing Tree is more than just a visual spectacle; it embodies the synergy between art and the environment, celebrating the beauty of sound and the landscape. Whether you are an art enthusiast, a nature lover, or simply seeking a peaceful retreat, this sculpture offers a moment of reflection and wonder. I had a lovely time...

THE SINGING RINGING TREE IS A WIND POWERED SOUND SCULPTURE RESEMBLING A TREE SET IN THE LANDSCAPE OF THE PENNINE MOUNTAIN RANGE OVERLOOKING BURNLEY, IN LANCASHIRE. COMPLETED IN 2006, IT IS PART OF THE SERIES OF FOUR SCULPTURES WITHIN THE PANOPTICONS ARTS AND REGENERATION PROJECT CREATED BY THE EAST LANCASHIRE ENVIRONMENTAL ARTS NETWORK (ELEAN). THE PROJECT WAS SET UP TO ERECT A SERIES OF 21ST-CENTURY LANDMARKS, OR PANOPTICONS (STRUCTURES PROVIDING A COMPREHENSIVE VIEW), ACROSS EAST LANCASHIRE AS SYMBOLS OF THE RENAISSANCE OF THE AREA. DESIGNED BY ARCHITECTS MIKE TONKIN AND ANNA LIU OF TONKIN LIU, THE SINGING RINGING TREE IS A 3 METRE TALL CONSTRUCTION COMPRISING PIPES OF GALVANISED STEEL WHICH HARNESS THE ENERGY OF THE WIND TO PRODUCE A SLIGHTLY DISCORDANT AND PENETRATING CHORAL SOUND COVERING A RANGE OF SEVERAL OCTAVES. SOME OF THE PIPES ARE PRIMARILY STRUCTURAL AND AESTHETIC ELEMENTS, WHILE OTHERS HAVE BEEN CUT ACROSS THEIR WIDTH ENABLING THE SOUND. THE HARMONIC AND SINGING QUALITIES OF THE TREE WERE PRODUCED BY TUNING THE PIPES ACCORDING TO THEIR LENGTH BY ADDING HOLES TO THE...

Great attraction to visit if you’re passing that way. I first saw this when it was shiny and new in 2007 and it’s still going strong when we visited on the way past this weekend although it’s a bit weathered now. Best visited on a moderately windy day because too little or too much wind and it doesn’t sing as well. When we went this weekend it was extremely high winds so the audio on the video is crazy, don’t listen with headphones :’) It’s almost impossible to get the sound of the tree on videos so it’s worth experiencing for yourself and the YouTube videos don’t do it justice. There is a 4 seat picnic bench which needs reloading and one of the wooden stools has come off. Accessible via a 5 minute walk from the carpark, along a gravel path. We saw a mum coming back towards us with a baby in a stroller managing the path fine but the last bit on the way back up is a slight incline so bare that in mind unit visiting with a heavier wheelchair. The path also experiences strong cross winds.

An unusual sculpture/construction hardly a piece of art? I think something more fitting to Lancashires past would have been better but its worth a visit if your out walking. The views are great into Yorkshire and also over Burnley. Their are historical battle field sites and woodland walks in the immediate area as well as two reservoirs. Parking is easy with a purpose built carpark and other parking along Crown point. People with Disabilities can get to the sculpture as it has a stone aggregate path but wheelchair users would probably need someone with them. There are picnic benches if you want a table for food...
