A particularly special place steeped in history. You can park beyond the first cattle grid. Be mindful this is private land and there is a lot of livestock including lambs and bulls. Keep dogs close and under control. It is also quite marshy in places There are no facilities. On the track you can see barrows to the left and the track crosses the Devil's causeway though there is no sign of it now Once parked as instructed by the sign Follow the wall up hill to the gate and onto the crags Historical places of note from right to left Follow wall to the cut/track through crag called Salters Nick (stone age settlement 12000 BC) Bear left on top of crag for remains of stockade from iron age Left down to valley and up to trigpoint for spectacular Northumberland views Left down hill to big rock called Pipers Chair which is above the Roman fort Below this is a surprise if you can find it... Back along the track towards the farm then left along the wall all the way back to the gate you entered by then back down to car Make sure to shut the gate behind you! Enjoy, it is a very special place. Leave nothing please

Shaftoe crags is an outstanding area to explore. For trig-baggers there's a trig point; you will also find the devil's punchbowl and the jubilee stone as you explore. See if you can find the hidden cave too. There are also magnificent views in offer, on a clear day you will see Wallington Hall and Cambo's Holy Trinity Church, and the Simonside Hills. The Crags are well worth a visit...

Great for walking around on your own/with the family. Even better if you're a climber/boulderer. Tons to have a go on. Park sensibly and look out for the cows. Take all rubbish home with you. Clean chalk carefully from the rock too!
