We had seen this from our campsite and wondered exactly what it was....
The monument is to Francis Bassett, and from a distance looks to be just a church spire, is in fact a 90foot obelisk!
The views across Redruth and surrounding countryside are amazing, and reportedly, on a clear day, you can see both coasts..
The day we went was somewhat hazy and misty.
Information on the Internet says there is a stairway inside to a higher platform, but the door is now blocked with an iron gate, so no chance to get up their.
Besides which, some people have kindly deposited a good amount of refuse and dog mess bags inside the doorway - you do wonder about people sometimes....

Read moreWow, Spent a fantastic afternoon exploring the Carn Brea area with the family. Beautiful views of Redruth, Pool and Camborne from the Bassett Monument summit on a clear day. The monument itself is magnificent and a real focal point of the aforementioned towns. The treck to the summit is via a narrow, bumpy lane so would recommend walking up there from the main road if possible. There are a variety of massive boulders around the monument and the Carn Brea area in general, which are fascinating and great for exploring and climbing on. Worth going up here on a misty day too as it's really...
Read moreStunning place to go, the views are amazing. The monument is just fantastic and gets you asking questions of who? when? why? On a clear day you can see St Ives and beyond in both directions. Just sitting there you can lose track of time and just while away a good few hours away from the rest of life and the world. The road leading up to this place is more than lumpy and pot holy, it's a single track with a few residential properties along the way so please be respectful to them and take your time along the way. Go, enjoy, make some memories and learn the History...
