Pound Wood Nature Reserve is a contained area of unspoilt Essex woodland full of wildflowers & mature trees. Like many Essex deciduous woods it's a springtime oasis for wildflowers, especially the native Bluebell. However, what makes Pound Wood so special is its population of Heath Fritillary butterflies. The species is in drastic decline regionally, but here due to Essex Wildlife Trust management the national trend has been reversed. The presence of common cow-wheat grass in Pound Wood provides the larval food for the Heath Fritillary. So this tiny wood is maybe the primary reason why the Heath Fritillary hasn't become extinct already in UK.
