We spent Saturday 27th September visiting the train running day, we spent all day there 10am - 4pm and enjoyed it a immensely. You could ride on the train as many times a you wanted and there was lots to see and experience during our visit, with multiple model railway layouts set up inside the roundhouse on this day. Barrow Hill Roundhouse was buzzing with plenty of activity, there is a good cafe inside and a good quality burger van parked within the site opposite on this day. The toilets were clean, well maintained and fit for purpose. Dogs are welcome and several were in attendance. All the volunteers and staff I encountered well very helpful and friendly, a special mention to Derek, who gave us a great talk about the working of the signal box, tours of the box were on the hour and lasted about 30 minutes, thank you Derek and all your colleagues at BH. I have provided plenty of pictures to help illustrate what the Roundhouse has to offer, if you want to see the trains in action visit my You Tube channel Maddymaddog
Barrow Hill Roundhouse is well worth a visit on an event day, plenty of parking was available. We had a short wait queuing to get in, about 5 or so minutes, I put that down to the popularity of the day and it didn't detract. It cost me (adult) £16 to get in, which personally I thought was good value spending all day there, worth 5 stars, have a day there if your...
Read moreFirst time visit, staff friendly and helpful. Plenty of free parking. Has a cafe for hot snacks and drinks and a small shop at the entrance. M/F toilets including disabled. Best to check website for opening times, some weekends used for closed parties. Good information boards around the site with staff ready to chat. Relatively level underfoot but it is an historic industrial site. Easy to find with satnav and the postcode off the website, brown signs when you get near. Lots to see and family friendly with a trail for children. Dog friendly too. Reasonable charge on entry with membership options available. A great afternoon out.would recommend.
Edit. On the second visit we watched the turntable demo, visited the deltic preservation society sheds which was brilliant with a cab you can sit in and plenty of souvenirs. Took the signal box talk in the signal box - really interesting by one of the volunteers an...
Read moreAttended for the Rail Ale festival.
Was run brilliantly. An astonishing amount of ales to try. You got a half pint glass (to keep) on the way in and most drinks ranged from £1.90-2.40 which the odd outlier for the truly ridiculous %'s. Amazing and almost paralysing selection of ales, ciders and gins
The food outside was a fairly good mixture unless you're a vegetarian or vegan. Possibly up the ante for the non meat eaters in future?
My only real snag was both the sound quality and line up order on the Saturday. I understand its going to be hard to sound check and get so many artists sounding good but often it was just so off that you couldn't hear them.
The second to last band on the Saturday evening were a poor fit too. Playing songs no one knew (and our group consider ourselves quite eclectic) which kind of killed the mood considering the queen tribute act were headlining.
Will absolutely be back next...
