Great opportunity to see these beautiful creatures up close and learn more about them from knowledgeable volunteers! Met a stunning barn owl named Summer out of her cage and was in awe of the plumage and inquisitive personality she had. There are so many varieties of owls (barn, euro eagle, snowy, tawny, screech, great grey) and other birds of prey like red tail hawks and buzzards to see.
We came at feeding time and interesting to see how they eat their food whole and display as natural as possible behaviors they would in the wild. Also, great to hear all of the different sounds each one made up close. Sadly, we heard how one falcon was left in a box outside their facility and great to see how they took it under their wing 🦅 and have a chance to thrive. Very peaceful surroundings and friendly staff top off this must visit organization. When we visited on Friday they were open until 2pm.
Unfortunately Festival Park is closed for an indeterminate time where visitors had more ample parking and use toilets so people should be aware that this limits certain services and plan accordingly and above all, be mindful that the owl sanctuary is doing the best they can given the circumstances on top of offering free entry and run by volunteers! Consider making a generous donation like we did and help this worthy cause and improve the lives and facilities of...
Read moreA really brilliant place with free entry. We visited on a Sunday and were able to stroke an owl and a tortoise, with plenty more birds to see and also a bearded dragon and goats. Only small but worth the visit and mostly accessible with prams, though steep in places. Paths have been kept clear of debris and in good condition. Some of the enclosures could do with a bit of love but it's definitely worth a £5-£10 donation. The shop was a bit empty but has a nice range of handmade and owl themed bits and bobs and a nice charity shop vibe. Also sells bottles/ cans of pop. There is an Aldi and a MacDonalds within easy driving distance.
Car park area is small but plenty of parking on the hill. Maps will tell you to turn off into a sort of close of very large houses and go past the end one - you can just stay straight on the road through a gate to get to where you need to be. The road is narrow but there is a particularly large passing place about half way. Alternatively, you can park at the bottom of the hill and walk, which probably wouldn't take more...
Read moreSet in woodland against a backdrop of mountains this is truly wonderful. Run by volunteers and donations from visitors this sanctuary is home to rescued owls and birds of prey. The dedicated volunteers have the most amazing bond with the birds as demonstrated by the way the birds nuzzle the faces of the people. We had the most amazing experience of holding an owl which was an emotional moment to be so close to something so majestic and beautiful.
One thing I will say is that I noticed that some of the enclosures had to have a special webbing placed against the bars because of disrespectful people stuffing their fingers in between the bars and even though the volunteers told them to stop it still happened. It was adults doing this! I even had some stranger come up behind me fussing the owl I was holding. This was unpleasant as I was doing my best to remain still and quiet and respectful of such an honour as holding an owl. Please, if you do go, be respectful instead of selfish and moronic like some of the people...
