In my opinion, one of the best military museums in the UK. If you’re ex-military, give yourself a whole day to view. When I first read about it I thought definitely an interesting place to visit and went with certain expectations based on other museums. On arrival we headed for the red gates and on entry was honoured with a salute from Steve Perry, it was quite a wet day so we were keen to get inside and go outside later when the rain eased off. The ‘Guardroom’ was the first port of call which is a shop selling interesting items and point of admission. It is very worthwhile watching the main video in the cinema before following the site guide, it relates the full history following acquisition of the site in 2003, the construction, restoration and improvement to the site. Steve and his wife have done an absolutely fantastic job in the creation of the museum and collection of all the exhibits on display, the work is always ongoing and I understand that they have a huge amount of other items in storage awaiting expansion of the display areas. Whatever service you might have had an interest in, there is something for you. It is a very varied collection of Army, Navy and Air Force exhibits, some First World War displays, dioramas etc, laid out in a diverse arrangement and connection of buildings. Next time I go, I’m planning to have a whole day. Whether a family with children, a couple or by yourself, it’s still an...
Read moreHaving spent the previous day enjoying Tintagel, we spent the night in the carpark in the village. The following morning the drive to the Davidstow Airfield took just thirty minutes as the roads were clear. We were welcomed at the gate by Steve, one of the team of volunteers who runs the Davidstow Airfield and Cornwall at War Museum complex.
The entry costs just £7 pounds, and in my estimation it is worth every penny. The sheer dedication these people have for this facility shines through in the detailed presentations. The video of the history of Davidstow is an absolute must, as it leads you through the building of the complex and populating the displays. The Hawker Hunter and the Fairey Gannet are just two of the exhibits that have an interesting history.
The first and second world wars had a huge impact on the people of Cornwall, and this museum reflects that in the displays and videos. As an avid history buff, I found the most difficult part of the tour was actually leaving Davidstow. As museums go, this was one of the best experiences I have had.
If like me you are touring Cornwall, and enjoy the rich history of this county, then add this venue to the list of must visit places. My thanks to those who made this visit possible, as their dedication and passion for preserving our history is clearly evident.
Best wishes

Read moreA must visit for anyone interested WW2 and the Cold War, especially the former. I've been 3 times over the past 5 years and have appreciated the positive changes made to an already fantastic place of interest. Great to see 111 Sqn 'Black Arrow' Hunter which took part in the formation looping of 22 Hunters - a world record. The beauty of the Hunter is a fine juxtaposition to the displayed Gannet which, I think, is an example of function over form but I love it. The Mess, peopled by suitably attired harlequins, is pretty unique and very effective. The collection of model aircraft is impressive as is the overall atmosphere of the displays which certainly had the effect of transporting me back to a different time. Staff are brilliant and fully engaged with us. They are enthusiasts who have certainly maintained their enthusiasm.! I must mention the little RAF Museum which, whilst a separate entity, is very much worth a visit. It is free entry with a donation appreciated and is hosted by a lovely husband and wife team who are so determined to commemorate the heroic role of those who served at RAF Davidstow. Some lovely displays and fascinating stories to be experienced. Allow time to visit this labour of love by this old couple. I shall be returning to spend...
